I am doing fun stuff hopefully noisia WOOOOT
what is the co efficient of linear expansion?
the co-efficient of liner expansion is the rate per degree celcius that a given metal expands. when you put heat in to a metal it expands, this is actually a linear equation. each metal - even all alloys - expand at different rates cos of their chemical composition.
steel expands at 0.000013 mm for every degree celcius that it rises. if you heat a 100mm long piece of steel up to 1030C - using round figures and asuming it is already 30c - it will actually measure 101.3mm exactly. i think i did the maths right there but this has massive implications on super structures like bridges and buildings etc. it may seem like a small figure but it totals pretty fuggin quickly....

How hot does the plane get when its above the clouds and near the sun?
Angel,
It depends on air temperature and the speed the plane is going, as an example the Lockhead SR-71A, blackbird, spy/recon plane traveling at over 3000km/h has that much friction on its skin from the air that it gets well over 100C, the pilots had to wear big mofo thermal insulation suits so they wouldn't get toasted just sitting in the cockpit...
