Over the last few years, there seems to have been a major trend towards "mash-up" - 2 tracks squashed together/overplayed/mixed in to make a "new" tune. You know - things like "Take me up the Zombie" and so on....

What do we think of this???

like 75% of them smile.gif HATE the other 25%

a classic is classic by definition

rarely is a classic improved by altering it

often it seems like quick way to cash in on sounds that are known to be popular

if people used thier talents to create new and fresh sounds and songs , we would be better off

than givvin them a new coat of paint and selling them as new

i agree with you on this in most cases...

I agree with ya jase! Its an easy way of pleasing all. Educate the new and keep the old crew happy.

Some are ok yes and some suck but don't wee all belive that about some tracks.
I brought a mash up which is Donna Summers track I feel Love mixed with Green Velvets La La Land to create ""I Feel La La"" looking at the record i have just relised i've had this tune for nearly two years and only played it a hand full of times smile.gif

I have a real problem with artists releasing mashups, especialy when they are releasing their own tracks as a mashup *cough* milo *cough*
call me sinical but mashups which are released for sale are just a money grabbing ploy by producers who think they can still squeze a few dollars out of a track which did well.

with that said im not against mashups in clubs or as part of mixes at all, they allow a DJ to bring in a element possibly not heard much in a particular genre. in my oppinion they sit much lower then the remix in the ladder of artists origonality and contribution, atleast with a remix you can take a song and completely rebuild it from the ground up

i guess i have to resign myself to the fact they will always be here,

I hate 75% of them, and most are so fairly badly produced.

Mark Sherry is one artist that i look forward to his mashups though.

I hate them... Artists should base their production on their own orignality. Not steel the hard work of others. IMO

Take Me Up the Zombie, and the mash-up of Sandstorm and that song with the female vocals which currently escapes my song-name database (the one in my brain box) are by far my two favorites, and probably where the benchmark should be set.

Otherwise I'm not a huge fan of them smile.gif

Most are good in my view. I find that alot of people tend to like remixes anyway so mash-ups aren't that different. If there are 2 songs that you like and they are both "mashed" together and sound really good, then I think the artist has proven a point. Alot of the time it takes skill because you don't just mix the songs together, there's more talent involved then just that.
SpecialKr
Take me up the zombie def. my fav (properly produced) mashup

however for the most part its just driving what were once great songs into the ground. I really hate it when 1 is a track i like mixed with one i dont! and has anyone noticed that fresh only seems to play the mash-up versions, never the originals? it drives me insane!

Yeah I've noticed that, but honestly, I think it's because Fresh is trying to be different to all the other stations who will tend to just play the original's. I know Nova does mash-ups from time to time but I think Fresh is trying to head in a different direction to the others.

fair enuf...im pretty over fresh atm. so the mash-up factor is just one more burr in my side really. *sighs about feeling so jaded*
I LOVE some of the specialty shows, but KaBoom has really lost whatever it used to have and Im so over presenters, that aren't supposed to be on air for more than 30secs. at a time, talking about shit that cant really interest anyone except possibly the people that know them.

i'm with the lovely Special K... fresh need to start looking for new material and playing less of the mash-up's and commercial crap u hear on all the other stations...

I'm not that big a fan of mash-up's and find they rarely improve either of the originals... like Jase said... these songs are classics for a reason... toying with them and putting them with other tracks often seems sacrilige to me! Some are good but most are just plain lazy works of psuedo artistic talent!
bekavichr
I am a little bit of a mashup fan , although some do annoy the be jebus out of me ... I guess it just depends
absent1r
those ones on nova and safm are WRONG, like eminem over the top of some 80's rock band riff... i mean come on!! im so glad i no longer have to listen to that crap since changing jobs smile.gif

having said that... ive heard other ones (not on the radio) and i dont mind afew of them...
xSketchyxr

And kirsty, honestly what other stations are there, nova top 50, MMM, JJJ, safm, they're all dodge and only occasionally play decent music, Back in the day on fresh is THE BEST show ever it's the fucking bomb, i remember i was driving in my truck and the rainbow high in the sky came on, just so happens i had to be right out the front of elizibeth senior school or somthing well anyway jumped out cranked a little and had smoke, but over all if your that staunch about the radio... by a cd player wink.gif mwa
Maori_Messiahr
check this out, im gonna mash mash up with mash up till mash up requires a mash mashety mash and don't remember tht mash will mash you good unless mash get mash in mash mapiech
SpecialKr
Hehehe back in the day is a wicked show, but im lucky to be able to listen to the radio when its on! There is def. some top stuff that appeals to me on fresh majority of the time, but im finding more and more i get to listen to dance music i like on nova & safm suprisingly. even mix rofl.

needs more d&b but not the cheese stuff wink.gif

Any of those stations will do when that Fat Al is on Fresh. He's as funny as child with cancer. mad.gif
Maori_Messiahr
HAHA how can you come up with that shit XD oh maate yes truly funny as biggrin.gif and anyway when fresh is playing bad music cd, no actually when cd is broken fresh when fresh bad music fix cd player thats how it goes yeh wink.gif fuck oh and the reason it says nova top 50 then just other radio broad casters is cause i was gonna put the type of music that was played but i fell asleep for like 5 10 minutes woke up and like put the other radio dudes but it's all beans, radio's dodge cd isn't dodge biggrin.gif oh and Dumb and bAss... well...it's all in the name wink.gif
KandiRaverr
sorry, but i must say i quite like that Mylo vs MSM mash-up. but you are right majority of them are crap.

with that said like everyone else i am absolutly IN LOVE with Take Me Up To Zombie!
keko_kekor
Depends how it's done really. Most of the commercially released mash-ups i've heard haven't been that great but there is the occasional one that works awesomely like that one they used to play on fresh a bit with "Raphi Rosario - You Used to Hold Me" and "Kernkraft 400 - Zombie Nation"
serendippityr

This is a really interesting question - because dance music is so much based on samples, taking something old and making it fresh and exciting - finding a new way to use an old sound.

The concept of DJ-ing is also based on mixing two songs into one to keep the party flowing

But when does mixing become mashing? And where does mashing become shit tongue.gif

I think mash-ups can be done well but arent always.
philbertr
If peeps are saying mashies are good cos they help educate the new generation to what the veterans got down to then it's time that we installed "club history 101" into the school curiculum. i realise some parents may get a liiiiiiiittle narcy about the drug taking side of things but like many will testify to you don't need 'em to have a great time biggrin.gif.

i find mashups to be a lame attempt by self promoters to cash in on someone elses tallent. Live DJ mixing is a different story. I've heard some good DJs mix dfferent tracks live which still keeps the original flavour and feeling of the track. Too many times have i been out and heard the beginning to a classic and gotten amped up only to find it's not what i thought it was. It's cool to have one or 2 samples in a new track but not when those samples are the base for the track....

Some people have said "that's how new music is formed" but that's a load of balogne. artists in the past may have used the same Instruments but not the same melodies. in music developement there have always been stand out artists who have made their own flavour which while similar to the sounds of the time have been different and stand out from the rest. I'm all for sampling and giving props to other artists for what they've done but i feel some people take it too far.

having said that there are a couple of mash-ups that are wikid and are great mixes but most aren't all that.

my 11 cents plus GST cool.gif

Well said PB! biggrin.gif

I don't think I could have said it any better! I agree completely, most mash up are rip offs of great songs, and don;t do the original any favours.. I have lost count of the times I have been driving and what i think is "Energy 52" turns out to be that "man on the moon crap"! mad.gif WTF!
