My first thread!

Okay, I'm not that much of a rev head, but I'm not a complete noob either..

I'm just wondering, how do exhaust systems and POD filters work, how does the car get extra hp from them?

Thanks in advance..
KandiRaver
lol.. i would like to know that too actually! i wanna start working on my car etc, and it'll be nice to know what stuff actually is!

YES! The extra breathing capability of your engine will increase its horsepower. Think of an engine as an air pump. The better more efficient that engine can pump gases in and out of it the less internal resistance occurs resulting in increased horsepower.
Pod filters do increase air flow but most people put them on the end of their throttle bodies where all the air they can draw in is super heated by the engine's heat. Hot air is less dense than colder air which in results in smaller eplosions in the combustion chanbers that turn decreases horsepower. You can box off your pod airfilter and duct it to the front of the car you will overcome the hot air problem. In most newer electronic fuel injected cars the intakes have been adequitely designed and all that is needed is to install a higher flow panel filter in the std airbox and if need be re duct a cold air intake to that box.

As for exhausts They do increase horsepower as well. Usually a larger pipe diamiter will increase power but going too large will actually cause a loss of lower end power ( sluggish take off). Putting a set of high flow headders on the start of the exhaust system will also increase power as they are designed to help draw gas out of the head faster by use of a suction effect.

With a set of extractrs a suitibly sized higher flow exhaust with decent mufflers not those poxy looking milo tins people put on cars. A decent cold air ducted air filter stc you should see an increase of somewhere from 8 - 15 horsepower or in a turbo car a lot more with a properly designed turbo manifold and higher flow dump pipe plus you get the added bonus of better turbo response and also higher boost levels can be reached through higher turbo efficiency.

hope that helps biggrin.gif

Hmm, how do you actually box off the POD? Pics?

btw that was a great post, it shall go down in history as one of the best posts on the internets.
BOOSTING
I don;t have pics of a boxed off pod filter as i installed a K&N flat panel filter in my standard air box. I will be adding a larger cold air duct to this in the near future to icnreace the efficiency of the intake system. Then an exhaust consisting of extractors, 2 & 1/4 inch pipe with a straight through resinator and a lukey performance muffler. This should make the engine breathe to the best of its current abilities. This in turn will let her rev to her redline a lot easier and make power all the way there too instead of currently starting to drop off power about 1000RPM short.

yeah what boosting said smile.gif
DTN
How much did all that set you back BOOSTING? is your car turbo or not?
BOOSTING
No the car i have now isn't turbo my last one was. The car i have now is a 89 cleica with a 2.0L twincam multicalve 3sge engine which really benefits from a better flowing intake and exhaust. The filter costs about 120 dollars from memory and is a oiled cotton filter. Its washable so you don't have to buy another one for the life of the car just wash, re oil and reinstall.

Turbulence
Just take the aircon belt off your engine if you want extra hp...
Harley
Put in a super charged 351ci V8 in and then i think youl have enough ponys to keep up with the busses
brapdat
Go grab a Straw, put it in your mouth and go for a run around the block.

I have a K&N pod on my engine (13B REW) And an Exhaust Technology Exhaust which is Custom Extractors, Hi Flo cat, Rotorflow Resinator, Rotor Flow Muffler all in 3" Stainless stell. It was $1800 new and the pod was about $70 new.

To turbo your car (Assuming its a FWD, twincam 4cyl) then your probably looking at around $5000ish to do a drive in drive out job.

You may/will need...
Engine rebuild/decompresion plate
Turbo
Manifold
Dump pipe, Exhaust.
ECU
Injectors
Tune
Intercooler
Plumbing
And a few other bits and peices like oil lines and all that.

I wouldnt recomend doing it, if you want a turbo car then go buy one which already has a turbo. For $8k - $10 you can get a nice S4/5 RX-7 13B turbo, Nissan 180sx or Silvia, bit more will get you a R32 Skyline etc. etc.

You can only make so much power out of a 4cyl NA engine and the more you modify it the less reliable it will be and if you spend the same cash on a Turbo engine then 9/10 times it will have more power and more reliable.

Hope that helps.
Bexter
the car stuff .... its hurting my head...
Turbulence
Or buy the "turbo" badgeplate from the wreckers and stick it on your car - then when people will think you have a turbo, but the engine is farked laugh.gif

woe woe woe, slow down there cheese tits. i don't want to do anything to my car, it's a peice of poo. i'm saving up for an MX6 and i'm learning the car lingo now so that when i do start to hot up a car i don't get ripped off/do stupid shit.

your post was still worth reading though brapdat.
brapdat
No worries mate.

Why a MX-6 tho? Waste of time if you want to modify it in my opinion.
DTN
well the car i drive now is a telstar tx5, and i really like it and the mx6 is pretty much just a sports version of the tx5.

waste of time? ohmy.gif
brapdat
The MX-6 is pretty much a Ford Probe which looks different.
They are nice cars but im just not a fan of anything large with FWD.
DTN
the newer ones are mostly AWD and probes and mx6's are the same thing.
brapdat
AWD? you sure? think the only AWD is a Mazda 6
DTN
woops sorry i think i got confused, they're actually 4WS not AWD, that confuses me every time.
brapdat
Ah yep, bit of a difference there.

AWS is ok for everyday driving and all that. Lots of cars have it but when you start doing so sprited driving (hooning) it can get annoying and dangerous. Lots of drifters/racers remove the aws and fit solid mounts for the 4ws setup. Cars like FC RX-7s, 180sx Skylines etc.
DTN
sucks, i really liked the mx6's, can't believe all this time i thought they were AWD.

bah!

none of those other cars take my fancy, they all seem a bit cliche.
BOOSTING
Mx6 come in a 2 door turbo version too. If i was going for one get that one easy mods to do.......intercooler, raise boost, exhaust, filter will net you lots of extra ponies and a smile this big biggrin.gif

brapdat
They do go pretty hard but the gearboxes are plastic and unless you like spending $1500 to fix one everytime you smash it i would stay away.

Whats your budget? im sure we could find you a nice car to suit your taste
BOOSTING
Drivelines are always going to be an issue with performance mods. Some cars are over engineered and cope with as many mods as you can throw at them. As some of us know some are not haha. Budget is the biggest killer in the how fast do you really want to go stakes.
DTN
there is some nice ones around, but not too many.

i'm looking for something in the 7-9 grand range.
brapdat
What about a HD Mazda 929? These things were about $70k - $80,000 brand new and you can get them for around your budget, they look insain with some nice 18 - 20" wheels and have every option avaliable and more. They also go pretty hard and are over engineered.

Most people will see it, and be like "what the frak is that?"
DTN
i've seen a hotted up one of those before i think.. i thought it was a soarer for a while.

aren't they v8s?

brapdat
3.0L V6 190hp i think. Awesome cars, i wanna get one for a Daily. They look like Japanese Mobster cars.
DTN
haha they do too..

theres one for sale in vic on autotrader, too bad it's auto :<
he only wants 7,500 for it.
brapdat
im pretty sure that all of them Are Automatics mate. They are a large luxury car so im 99% sure they were never sold with a Manual option. Same with Statesmans and Calais.
DTN
oh dear :/
BOOSTING
190kw is good power but the weight of this car will not allow it to go like 190kw should.

What do you want out of your car? eg performance, cruzing, luxury????
Jutsin
Some great info here, as in about 2-3 months I'll be looking at upgrading my intake and exhaust to get some extra HP out of my car too.

Thanks to BOOSTING especially for taking the time to put up those knowledgable words biggrin.gif
BOOSTING
no worries i knew you would come across this thread sooner or later and it would be of benefit to you as well biggrin.gif
DTN
i don't know what i want :< i need to look around more.

well put boosting...

My exhaust is a "Mines" 2 1/2" Mandrel bent stainless steel system. Although it does reach 3" in some places. But the Japanese Mines work shop know what they are doing, and my car makes nice power and is still nice to listen to.. Not too loud!@!

I also have a k&n pd filter which I have fitted a cold air duct to and that works a treat... Gotta love hearing turbo flutter through it... biggrin.gif

Yep thats a prime example of what i was saying before. A reputable tuning house like Mines designed a turbo exahust system for an evo lancer and its not 4 inch haha laugh.gif laugh.gif like people think they need. Size does matter people biggrin.gif Lots of people don't like pod filters either but they are great filters just have to install them properly as you have done there. smile.gif

i have a 2.5 inch cat back exaust atm, with redback performance glass pack muffler, and a 2.5 inch electric movable baffel plate noise reduction valve behind that going over the diff to a 3 inch tip, atm its a standard cat, and log manifold but in a few weeks im fitting a JMM motorsports race series extractors with HPC coating, and getting a long broom handle to deal with the cat tongue.gif, and yea getting that piped through. i have ported and polished the head to the exaust ports wont be holding the exaust back at all.

and yea the intake i fitted with a pod filter in the standard air box, and i have installed a bigger air snorkle off the Au XR8. still using the standard air box to throttle body piping because upgrading the piping actually reduces power in NA form on the EF falcons. but yea ive also ported, polished the intake manifold so its all ready to flow 200 RWKW in NA form, but i wont get the most out of that untill i give it boost.

ha ha and finally i have the stage 3 cam sitting on my desk right next to me right now it wants to be put in so badly but yea when the funds permit ill fit it and a new computer.
brapdat
I just sold my Exhaust from the cat back (held onto the extractors) for $600 yew!!!!!!!!

Oh yeah, sold my car as well!
DeL
sold EVIL???

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

i got extractors 2 1/4 back to my diff a lukey resi and then into a ROTAFLOW with 3.5 dump. goes pretty well smile.gif

just need some cold air induction to the carb.. and ill be happy smile.gif
BOOSTING
i will be able to help you there craig i'm aquiring some 100mm ducting to go to my airbox. Comes in 6m lengths so i'll sling you a couple of meters and give you a hand you will notice the diff especially through the hills on a cold night. Feels more resposive and of course outright horsepower in increased hehe. Exa used to FLY through the hills at night.
waylander_jobby
update on the ol exaust, just finished designing it, im gonna have it made up and fitted between the cat and the first muffler its just a bit of pipe with a y peice welded into it, however the y peice is blocked at the end by a plate that can be removed when the need for extremely free flowing exaust is needed/wanted e.g. on the track and put back on when its not needed anymore.
