This is from my laptop, so the wireless on it is maxing out before the ADSL does (damn crap 802.11b). Have to try it from my desktop PC later

lol woudl be funny if two peopel in teh same house did it and got hugely different readings..

and one found out the other was biasing the network thru a gateway machine...

i use to shair a dial up account... now that was slow!!

That was from my desktop without my laptop's wireless slowing it down, but interestingly, while my download was slightly faster, my upload was slower

I do have traffic prioritisation here, so our servers and voice traffic get first priority, and they're hammering it pretty hard at the moment

yeah i hav noticed some abnormalities..

peopel with lower download speeds but with higher uploads..

OK so I showed this thread to a guy I work with.

This particular guy is one of those that always has to be better than everyone else. Every single thing that is said in our office, he has to outdo... whether it be something some has done/experienced, or even just down to advice (he was giving me advice on how I should have my hairdyed FFS)... he is the king know it all and it really fuks me off.

So anyway

I showed him this thread, and he promptly stood upright, and said in a I am so great voice, "at my old work, we had 2GBps down and uploads.

2GB per second? is that even possible?

This guy really gets on my nerves... I'd love to shoot him down on this! Little help?

My guess is t1 or t2 Internet (damn expensive though) but alot of American companies use it

so many factors affecting speed ...

cable can be good but is shared among the users in the area - ie: if 20 people in your street are using cable you might be slower than if only 4 people are using it. and adsl is so dependent on location, hardware, line quality etc that even next door neighbours may have wildly varying results from the same provider ...

bring on the wimax (if you don't know - google it)

WHilst the speed are faster in writing on ADSl2+ the distance you are from an exchange is a huge factor plus other things etc as Toby mentioned.

You will get the advertised 24Mbs speeds if you are practically next door to the exchange. The speeds do drop dramatically if you are more than about 1.5 kms from the exchange so you well getabout 5- 1.5 mbs form the exchange.

Also if you have lots of Rims and small gauge cabling from your exchange to your home then this will affect the performance of the speed also.

Just changed to 1500/256 on Adam.
