ok i could think of 1000 more questions to put into the poll, but i guess there will too many, that people would like to have their say on....

in my opinion, some religions are good (buddhism), some are bad (chistianity), i beleive theres some truth in all of them but over the years a few corrupt individuals have changed the scriptures to suit themselves and keep the masses in fear (of a god who is apparently forgiving but judgemental at the same time.....HUH???) in order to keep us good little worker ants under control. theres some good things that have come out of religion too i guess ie: a belief in ones own power over ones destiny, and meditation/prayer, but theres so much garbage also. things that cant possibly be true. i also believe Jesus was a real man, just that his story has been altered to, once again, keep us all in fear of his Daddy's so called wrath. anyway im bound to add more to this thread later but i just cant wait any longer to see what others have to say.... biggrin.gif

To be honest Cris, I agree with you on Christianity, only because it's pushed down everyone's throat more then any other out there. A religion in my view should be something by your own choice, and not to be forced onto you because religion means "belief" not "let's force the shit down people's throat until they don't have any other choice but to believe it".

so true. we were in town the other night and some brainwashed twot was yelling out at the top of his lungs

"he gave his life so that you can........, blah blah blah blah" wasnt really interested in the rest as i knew exactly what he was going to say, a load of malarkey (i love that word laugh.gif) so i just kept walking. and what shit me was the fact that he did it when people were expecting some entertainment (adelaide festival opening night) so he knew there would be heaps of people listening even if they didnt want to. ggrrr
LadyKr
I agree- there are some point in each religion that make sense and some people that truely believe what ever it is the believe.
Having said that- some people are almost psychotic about it, trying to force their beliefs upon other people, calling them hethans, trying to rip body piercings clean from the body and refusing to speak to people because they have a tattoo and have defaced the 'product or the lord'.
Religion isnt a bad thing- ive seen it 'save' many people, it gives some people something to live for, something to believe. Some people do take it too far, believe what you believe but it is not your job to force others into your beliefs- especially when it involves early morning visits with a bible dry.gif ive warned you before- the dogs do & will bite on command wink.gif
Those who have found religion & stuck by it (without becoming crazy) are alot stronger then me wub.gif i guess sunday mornings will always be a recovery morning for me laugh.gif but with my tattoos and piercings i doubt id be allowed in a church anyways

Christianity in it's true sense of the word isn't bad like you said. I am a christian, but I don't go to church, as i think church is an organisation, not a place of worship, And i don't say the bible we have today is absolute, because for one, it was invented by scholars of the early church, where they gathered every known letter written to churches, and previous scriptures, and chose the ones that best fit the description of the way they wanted ppl to believe.

Black see scrolls and old testament have a completely different way of writting, and you can tell the difference between what a man writes in his own mind and what is influenced by greater power, although all written by hands of humans.

I mean you have to look at evidence as well and not just dismiss it because the scientists say so?!? For example, the DNA strand of a human, is just as likely to come out of primordial soup, as it is for a tornado to tear through a junkyard and create a working 747. The odds of amino acids forming ONE living organism just by chance or evolution, is like 10^370, so like next to impossible... don't believe me, do some research into it...

I'm not saying GOD is of another dimension, or some wikidly unkown powerful force that you can't see, because i can't tel you what he is, although i know he exists, in whatever form he is, whether it's inside every man or whatever, but i also believe creation.

organised religion certainly has allot to answer for (be it christianity, cathlocism, islam, muslim, athiesm the list goes on!). I think the word relgion has become almost a dirty word in society... probably becasue the few (as with everything) ruin it for other true believers in the religion of thier choice. I am not in anyway religious, however I do believe in God (whoever/whatever that may be). My relationship and belief in him/her/it is just that, my relationship. I don't feel I need someone else to tell me how to worship God, what is right or wrong in his/her/it's eyes. I feel that's is something for me to interpret to suit my own needs/lifestyle at teh time. This is not the case for everyone though... allot of people need to feel a sense of belonging and hope and therefore cling to religion in the hopes of a better life. So while I lean towards making my own life better and doing the best I can by others with what I have, others need more structure and direction, they need to be told how to be better people and how to feel better about themselves and their lives.. in that context religion, whichever one people choose, has it's uses.. for the most part though it has become something of a monster and allot less people tend to err towards a particular religious belief. I think more people these days believe in a God of some form but are not necessarily religious. It shuold certainly not be so structured and demanding on ones life... it should complement and better it.. if it's not doing that then you probably haven't picked the right religion for you or have perhaps become lost in what it is that others think you should be getting out of it.

Although I believe religion is one of the world's leading sources of civil war, violence, and so forth .. religion was also the thing that influenced and made widely known the "common sense" laws - don't kill, steal, bang your neighbours wife, lie, etc.

People created religion for what I'd like to believe was a good reason, and similarly, people helped turn religion into reasons to create violence and aggression towards others.

People are the problem, in a way.
bek666r
I think religion is like a gun.. put in the wrong hands and it can be nasty..
I dont really follow any religion.. but I can see the good that it does for people.. and the bad that it does as well..
I used to hate any form of christianity.. but now I figure anything is good in the rite hands.
Its not religion thats the problem.. its the people that follow it.. and use it to gain power and money. Religion is just a costume for greedy people to hide under.
But it gives hope and faith to the good people out there..
so i guess its another one of these things that has a good and bad point to it..
n the real question should be which is more important to us.. people having faith and hope and something to live for? or getting rid of the power hungry people that are using it in a way which it was never meant to be used?
NokturnLr
Yeah foonj, thats what i mean, early church ie after christs death, after pauls lil shindig with christianity. Oh and it wasn't word of mouth before the bible was written, it was called scriptures, and it was written and held in libry like vaults, and not everyone could read them... The only reason the bible was created was to have it accessible to everyday people... and punched down to a DIY guide to christianity... there's a lot more to scriptures than the bible.

I was about to make another post and mention that as well .. the fact that MANY scriptures/books have been left out of the bible. Ones with contradictory views to some of the stuff that is currently widely consumed.

Well, i come from a VERY catholic upbringing. Up until i was about 12 i was REALLY religious. I loved listening about stories of good and Bad. Then i started to take interests in things like the power of dreams and experiancing a variety of spiritual things that were deemed by the catechism (not sure or the spelling, but it's the rule book of Catholicism) 'unnatural' 'un-holy' 'unearthly' and 'bad' etc...

on these grounds i tried to find answers and i found Jack - funnily enough... this was at age 12.

then i looked into some more controversial religions. I still currently look into, and practice alot of Pagan/ wicca stuff AKA withcraft. For a long time i was given ALOT of grief about it from my family. It was really hard. But at the end of the day, i live by my own set of rules, acknowledge the laws or Karma, be nice to everyone. and cause of this i go about my life happier than i was by being oppressed by a lifestyle, and a religion that offered me no enlightenment.

If you would like to hear an exceptionally similar true story, have a look at anything written by Fiona Horne. Great read.

Nice one Chris, a topic with substance smile.gif

Where do I stand on this?

Religion is the opiate for the masses.

I don't like any form of "organised" religion, if you believe in God you don;t need to donate 10% of your income, you don;t need to blow yourself up to get to God, and you don't need to tell people how to live their life, and you don;t need a building.

I went to a christian school when I came to Australia and they're rammed it down my throat everyday, eww! it was the worst experience, it made me turn away from ever going to church again. I was a Catholic so i was the devil's incarnate and had to be turned to their side of the fence. I had a seven day adventist at work trying to preach me till not that long ago... can they just give it a break? mad.gif

organised religion was created by men to control their peers...to keep the women modest, to take your money, and to divide....
I don;t believe that God is about that....

I believe there is a higher power. Universal and spiritual.

Im not highly religeous, but i do respect the fact that i was baptised a Roman Catholic, but I am also of Roman decent.

My mum is a Jehovahs Witness , I was brought up as one. I turned 18 and refused to go to there meetings and things. I will not bag there religion as my mum is still a part of it.

But I disagree with most of it, and to this day i dont really know what i believe in.

Like someone else has said religion has caused alot of wars, alot of Jehovahs witnesses have been killed for not going to war. I dont wish to look like a preacher so i shall stop right here.

Its all up to personal opinion my 35c smile.gif

I've been brought up by very greek orthadox traditions from my parents... I do believe in god.. but there are certain traditions and expectaions that are really rediculus and really annoy me for the fact i cant do washing on a "name day" or "sunday" because its concidered "gods day".

Not only that we celebrate easter and Chrismas by the old calender... and this always means this is celebrated up to 4 weeks after Australian Easter and Chrismas. This also means that we fast and cant eat cetrain foods from animals (milk, meat, cheese etc) apparently we do this to clense our body from all the sins.

sorry i might believe in God and his existance but the fact we cant wash on certain day or eat certains foods ...SH%##Ts me....and there are many other things as well like at church women arent allowed to wear pants or cross their legs or stand in the mens side of the church (right hand side)...

anyways im not going to continue cuz there is so much i can write but this would bore you all.. so thats my 2cents worth.

What u are talkin about is only VERY few churches... Why do people look at Churches as the minority groups which make it look extreme, it's like looking at the suicide bombers and saying every muslim is like that.

Unless u've experienced it and lived the life, don't say things like that angle_eyes.

Time for some facts - in short:

Circa 300+AD Emperor Constantine had conquered so many diverse foreign lands that his empire faced destruction from within due to differing religeous views from all off these cultures. in 325 he formed the Council of Nicea to, in short, amalgamate all religeons in to one. One of the councils tasks entaled the REWRITING of the bible to encompass as many of the religeons as possible and keep all of his minions happy and peacefull like.

I could go in to WAY more detail about this but i thought i'd keep it simple and just give you all a taste. if you want to learn more I insist you do some more research. The actual events may not have been as simple as i've made them seem but they are well documented and were very real. surprising how this information isn't taught in schools, hey?.... hmmm.

depends what church ,oh wise one

Religion-
should not be mocked off the bat!
you have to under stand that , over half of the worlds population are too stupid for me to understand
there are some ignorant , throwback , unfortunate, astounding people out there
so if you got a bunch of psychos running around screwwing each other and stabbing people for fun , raping women
That has to be controlled!
put a fear of god into them- cause they aint scared of your bleeding ,dead arse
great system -I fully endorse it!

but the problem is the fakers , and often the smarter section
this theory works for a while , but its human nature -power corrupts
so one of two things can happen , power corrupts or manipulative oportunists see an opportunity to further themselves

now I digress here
the budists have done pretty well cause they choose a leader real young and train him using various people that dont want to be leader- to be sensible!

so my point is -once you controll the masses , it goes out of control blink.gif

such a big topic and such little space!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with these two statements a lot. I follow nothing but the 'Religion of Sharan', which is a mixture of Buddism, Wikka, Hare Krishna, Christianity, Jedi and basic commonsense. The voice of my conscience is God, I hear and listen to it a lot, and that voice tries to steer me onto the right path - but the devils voice often wins the battles too wink.gif

The 10 Commandments are great principles to live your life by, if you interpret them correctly.
The basic law of the universe is 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'...better known as Karma...or in scientific speech 'every action has an equal reaction' biggrin.gif

If you live your life right, and are good to the world around you then you should never have to fear anything like 'the wrath of God'...... dry.gif

I am with the others who say organised religion is not for them. My religion goes everywhere with me....and it is mine alone wink.gif
philbertr
I'm not religious, at least not in the conventional sense of the word and have never been. I grew up under parents who were more open than most and who were not 'actively' religious themselves.

The Bible:
As has always been the style when recording or passing on a tale, of an important person or an event, metaphor's have been used to help visualise the setting. As an example, christ walking on water. He was such a revered person and so influential that it was said that he had the feet of a god/angel/spirit and that anyone who was such could have walked on water - not a quote. Next time you read the bible - that's gonna happen some time soon - look at it in chronological order, read what each prophet said about jesus in the same event and it will become clear that they are merely trying to describe his greatness and not preach that he IS the son of god. The bible is a book full of metaphor's and shouldn't be taken entirely literally - else you get fundamentalist christians like lil georgey bush running around everywhere, yay!.....

Heaven and Hell:
I personally don't believe in either but i do believe in the world we live in. The 10 commandments are a guide that if followed will help make this world in to a heaven, go against these rules and it will seem like more of a hell. I try to be good to all and to live by moral rules and i have to say i love my life, i've never been happier about it! But on the flip side i know of people who lie, steal, cheat etc. and i see their attitude, views and how they see life and they are living in hell on earth. How does it make sense to focus on the end of your mortal life when there is so much more to enjoy and to learn before then?... Carpe Diem

God:
waaaaaaaaaaaaay too hard to properly put in to words. i like the philosophical concept of 'god' but not of a single being. I prefer the hindu view of god that we all have our own god's which is what you bow to when you greet each other. I think Sharon's on the right path but then again she is a raving looney, jk tongue.gif biggrin.gif.

Looking to the future:
With all the replies to the original crIsP post it is clear that i am not alone in my views that religion and beliefs vary greatly between people but that's simply because we are all different. Everyone has different needs and passions in life which is why the one religion will never fit everybody. The one stand out point that is in EVERY religious school is that with good deeds good things will happen, with bad deeds the reverse is true. Sometimes you may need to talk to someone about what you've done and seek advice, which i think we've all done from time to time, but in my view i wouldn't trust a guy who isn't married and has chosen a life of celibacy to help me on my path. dry.gif

I've been trying to tell ppl that for a long time.

This isn't a go at you (or in any way shape or form disrespecting you, and maybe CrisP will agree with me) but I think that is what Cris means about people trying to force it down the throat of others. It's like anything, driving, getting into raves, learning (how to talk, walk etc.) is pretty much like religion, it should be a natural thing, not forced. You don't say to your child "Say Hello now or I'll smack you!". You say the word around them until they can/want to say it.

Where did i loose you?  I was saying all of them are just organistations...  I wasn't sayin any of them were evil, or any of them were right, and i wasn't bagging any.  People choose what to believe and if some people like to feel good about themselves by giving away an extra 10% tax (offering as the church calls it) thats fine by me, it's their choice! Thier money! wink.gif

My parents hate me listening to dance, but they don't bag me for it. they just don't want me listening to it while they are around, which is fair enough, and i can live with that cos i only see them twice a year. sad.gif

BTW, my dad was a missionary to australia, and now he is assistant pastor of a church, so i know first hand about "church" smile.gif only thing is, his church has 10 members, so i hardly think it's there for the orginsational purposes... i think it's more of a safe zone, or a feel good thing, and tell me theres something wrong with that...  I love my parents.. smile.gif

You lost me by giving Paradise church your personal guarantee. They are reknown bible bashers, with a 'with us or against us" attitude... I have not much to say about the assemblies of god, only charitable if you're born again christian... If you're not one of them they write you off.

And for the record, just because Angel eyes has only seen the inside of one denomination church doesn't mean she is not entitled to voice an opinion, at least she went to one, not much for other people commenting on the subject.. dry.gif

Im sad for you that you dont get more family time, I dont know the reasons but you'd think that having christian values should also include quality time with your folks. But that was not my point, i have been told many a time I will go to hell coz satan is in my music....please.... rolleyes.gif I was sent home with books designed to instigate the fear of god into me for listening to rock when I was a kid..

Not everyones experience with churches are as positive as you've had, and people don;t necessarily hate God, they hate the organisations created by man, ran by men for the benefit of man. Show me a pastor that has a job, supports his family, doesn't travel at the expense of the church community and still gives a good positive sermon without bagging every other religion, non believer and whatever else takes his fancy and I may be willing to listen...

Your dad's 10 ppl church may be more of what the love for god is all about than a giant church like paradise..

As for researching the bible and the history of church, I say Irrelevant, the bible was written by men so is not the word of god but the interpretation of whoever it suited at the time, and history doesn't say anything about what the church is all about today... wouldn't you agree? wink.gif

First i wasn't giving paradise my garantee, if anything i hate that church cos they give the rest a bad name aswell... don't get me started on them, i havew lots of experience with them... I was saying they are very accepting, because like you said they are an organisation, and mainly, if not soley after your money, so i think we're saying the same thing there bro! smile.gif

What angel eyes was saying is correct, and i wasn't saying her oppinion was wrong at all, it just sounded as tho she put the stereotype of "Church" on all denominations of christianity after only attending one type, non-catholic. (i think catholics are hypocrytes btw, and hated what they did in history, ie crusades etc...)

The reason i don't get to see my family is not by choice! They live in perth 3000K's away and i'm not exactly made of money and as missionaries, they don't have money either... we're not what you would call a well off family, which is why i'm at uni, to change that. I love may parents and i would love to see them every day. I know they feel the same way and i make sure they know how i feel. Not because i was baught up a christian, but because i sincerily love them. smile.gif

I didn't say my experiences in church are possitive. I hate the organisation of "churches". just like u say, so i think we're on the same wavelength u just missunderstood what i was trying to say. sorry if i was unclear.

One pastor that supports his family, pays his own travel expenses, doesn't bag other religions, always gives serious sermons, is my father. smile.gif He's not the only one either. The Pastor who passed down onto him was the same. My dad actually pays expenses to keep the church running, ei electrical bills, rates etc, beacuse there are not enough ppl in the church to support it.

yes. They found roman helmets and chariots at the bottom of the Red Sea. In the bible, moses parted the red sea, (who da frick knows how) and the romans drowned in it.

the universe has many unexplained facets, most of which can not be comprehended by human logic or thinking. one example of this:
the comparitive size of the plantes in our solar system relative to their distance to the sun is a veeeeery similar ratio to the size of electrons and protons and their distance appart from each other.....

here's a site to blow your mind.
Powers of 10
this doesn't dis/prove the existence of god but it does prove that there is definately more....

Yeah foonj, thats what i mean, early church ie after christs death, after pauls lil shindig with christianity.  Oh and it wasn't word of mouth before the bible was written, it was called scriptures, and it was written and held in libry like vaults, and not everyone could read them... The only reason the bible was created was to have it accessible to everyday people... and punched down to a DIY guide to christianity... there's a lot more to scriptures than the bible.

paul was be-headed in Rome, by the emperor of the day after he proposed
the teachings of Jesus Christ to be the closest things to PLUR and mankinds
quest towards enlightenment...... paul helped in spreading the gospel of
PLUR........albeit in a format which synthesized his own "spin" on the whole
religion issue.....nevertheless, and more tellingly, it was around this time that
andrew (another apostle of PLUR) rigid and uncompromising in his own belief
systems and dogma, turned up in rome, some 4 years after paul's be-heading
and proposed and preached what the current religious model was firstly based upon, along with another one of the 12 apostle's preachings. ( james or mark?)

So Christianity was basically formed out of a triumvirate of beliefs and certain gospels. Of course I say certain gospels because they (romans) left out
3 gospels. As did paul, andrew and the other who we shall call....alan.

These three(3) gospels had weird stuff that Jesus was reported to have done and
said....The gospels of thomas in particular had many fine parables about the life and fast times at Jerusalem High!

These developments in Rome soon precipatated the demise of the Western Roman Empire as marauding Visigoths (germany) streamed over the danube to RAPE and PILLAGE rome......and in 325-330 AD the Roman Emperor Constantine moved his entire RAVE (empire), to Constantinople, in what is now called ISTANBUL.

This, he did, AFTER first changing to and adopting CHRISTIANITY as the official
RELIGION....He allowed other religions to preach.......he championed individuality
as well........

More importantly however,......paul, or St. Paul now, was organizing RAVES (or shindigs, as they were known back then)....JESUS too was the king of Ravers as
he did not as much ...preach on temple mount.......ppft.........the bible is written
in parables (peshwah)as was the ancient aramaic term for it....

They were RAVIN'.....

For the record, the writer is hedonistic in projection and yet PLUR in religion. wink.gif

the only thing that suks is that everyone is gonna die eventually....and then theres nothing.

i dont wanna die....if i had a choice i would choose to die but till be able to think....like closing ur eyes its all black but u can just think
the_real_naked_chefr
It 's good to think that rav........and i think on a similar plane, but atomically speaking we have evolved to a point where even our soul (which is the only thing that relates us to the god-like entity at the event momentus) , has been altered at the atomic or elementary particle level to such an extent that we may experience nought at our own event horizon.

AHH!...WHAT I WOULD GIVE TO BE JETTISONED OUT OF A SATELLITE...SOMEWHERE IN THE M42 REGION OF DEEP SPACE.......THE ORION NEBULA.....WHERE MY TRUE BEING CAN UNRAVEL INTO THE DARK MATTER OF
OUR COSMIC BACKGROUND RADIATION.

....who knows , given the nature of the universe, and all possibilities, including the law of averages one could colonize, from a deathly dark matter state .....
A BRAVE NEW WORLD.

......god is the elementary particle (neutrino) @ event momentus that decided to observe what other particles were doing......and then spun the other way!!
This anti-establishment action enabled this particle to mix with others of a charged
variety ( photons) or electrons maybe....just a theory!

GOD = left handed neutrino.

On a brighter note I wonder when that cloning technology will become
available at supermarkets and come in family packs? laugh.gif

E-anr
I.ve been a sceptic all my life as i was bought up to belive that if it can't be seen its not there.

And one of the bigest problems is No one know who what where or when god is. yet we all seen to have our opinions about it. SO i believe God is what ever we want it to be.

My theory to this is all simple and hear me out when i say god/gods are not a THING that can be meterialised but the within the human mind it seems to have trouble accepting the simple fact that SHIT HAPPENS like it or not and that is a SIMPLE FACT OF LIFE. Life will go on and things will change and its how you deal with this that make you the better person.

However i do believe that there is a light at the end of ours tunnels and sometimes we have trouble finding the way. So we need something to believe in, when an answer can't be found or when all else is lost. We need something to explain the unexplainable and from with in that comes belief and hope that enspires us all to keep going. So at that moment of no return when you need to not hear but feel the right thing to do you ask yourself/ god why, what, who, where and when. and from with in that your thoughts comes the answers you most truely seek.

We are all our own gods our own free spirits, we all know the answers we just need to look truely deep enough with in ourselves to the point when you realise fait and the power of life. and this is the way we were crearted. So that we are able to survive fore ever after.
Created so that no matter what happend to us Good or Bad. That we could find the strength with in to survive and make the most of this precious gift of life we all have.

The Word GOD wasn't created to be idalise.
The Word GOD was created for all of us to have some kind of last hope!!!!
But more importantly something to live for.
