ok i know phones can do just about everything...

but what cant they do and what do you think they are capable of?......

i had an idea but am unsure of whether if its viable or not. but if someone posts the same idea then im thinking then maybe it might be worthwhile looking into...

your thoughts?....

my phone just has the capability to p*ss me off laugh.gif

I did notice today on my phone that it had a funtion called "Request Presence". I'm wondering if I type in someones number, then 'request presence' are they instantly teleported to me??? That would be cool tongue.gif

i used to do that on my 3 phone...

what so special about that idea?

i thought it was going to be something real interesting. like UBD maps Java application or something sad.gif

well since i learned java, then learned about java on phones i have now realised that the damn things will do anything you need of them. pretty much any recent model will have a java virtual machine on it, which means that any code that can be run on a desktop pc can be run on a phone, albeit with their currently limited resources (screen size, input devices, storage etc).

so stay tuned for internet-ready helpers like the ubd thing, and standalone 3d apps like doom, and boring things like DB transactions and network tools smile.gif but i love it - really ...

hey cris_p: i have an old friend who built a system which allowed a customer to access their bank account by sms - last time i spoke to him he was in trials with a south australian bank, but that was some time ago so maybe it didn't work out ...

what i want to see is a fully featured web browser and some bigger screens - like 640x480. but i love my sony-ericsson!

I dont know why mobile phone companies havent put solar panels on the fronts and backs of phones so that while your sitting at a cafe having a latte, your phone can be face down on the table with the solar panel absorbing useful rays and charging the battery! smile.gif thats my idea and i like it!

ravingham..... good choice of phone. i 2 have a nokia N90. and u can definately surf the net on it.. heres proof..

if you press your menue button and go down to the folder called "my own" you will see a program called WWW with a picture of a O for the icon. thats the opera browser... load that up and it will ask you what connection you want to use. use the one that sounds like mobile internet "its different from provider to provider" and load up any page u want smile.gif

mobile phones can do almost anything a computer can do with an un locked symbian operating sytem. and LEGAL copies of programs are available from www.my-symbian.com just click on the right section 4 ur phone. i have even seen a phone that can control a remote control car via bluetooth. thats pretty cool... i controled my computer from the other side of the room using my phone.

from the shop a phone is pretty average, but once u figure out how 2 install programs and games on ur phone its pretty sweet. smile.gif

Would be nice to see a mobile which can let you have access to security cameras around your house if you have any (like at the front door etc.) to keep an eye on your place while you aren't home.

i dunno bout you ppl but my phone can turn on.......

AND off!! i know amazing...

it also can give me a bit of a shock if i forget to put it on my table during the middle of the night and it ends up underneath my leg or summin and then some random weird person messages me and it vibrates... very bizarre you should try it...

well actually...

3 have a camera that u buy for about $230 i think, and if you have a 3 phone, you can dial up in to this security camera and watch and listen to whats going on in the room. i saw the camera on display on a 3 store.. it has a sim card in it so it may also have monthly costs 2 keep the sim active, and it would cost you what ever your standard rate is for a video call on the phone your calling from.

thats a wicked idea......

yes, yes i do, but my coding skills are at an early stage so can be very time consuming smile.gif for pre-made mobile apps check out getjar.com for some idea of what is being done at the moment ...
crIs Pr
yeah i was looking at it yesterday got some cool stuff
trying to get a browser working at the moiment but its doin my head in
dbbr
a browser for what? Surfing the Web? Just get a blackberry. I'm replying to this thread now on mine. Most forums are quite happy to run in low bandwidth mode for GPRS browsers.

toby74r
the browser is likely to be a simple(relative to ie or firefox) http browser that can veiw any compliant webpage and render it for the screen on the device.

i have heard many good things about blackberry's but i find the juice stains too much ...
but seriously, i think that the sheer versatility of java and the mobile virtual machine make it almost universal. just about anything written in java can be compiled for a mobile device, be it nokia, blackberry, sony-ericsson (my choice), psp, handheld, or tv set-top box ... just minimise resources and compile under j2me for mobile fun smile.gif

so far i haven't run a browser, but will have a look when i can chris_p, and let you know what i find out ...

dbbr

Java has one main problem - it is a resource pig. A small browser http compliant browser written in C and compiled for a blackberry is super fast. Then you write it in Java and watch the exponential use of Memory and CPU required ...

hmm? well i dont know what a blackberry is.

guess i have to look into that aswell biggrin.gif

ok i know what a blackberry is now.......

bit out of my price range atm. think ill look further into a browser for the phone i have.....
toby74r
hey cris_p i have been looking at using opera mini on my phone and so far had no luck with it - is it the same one you have tried? i have it installed on my phone and it runs, but if i try to veiw a page (even the preloaded shortcuts) i get nothing but a progress bar that say "processing" ... boring really smile.gif

apparently this browser works by sending the page you request to one of it's servers for "processing" and then back to your phone in a special version that fits onto a mobile. i think it might simply be taking so long for the response to come back (the servers are likely in europe) that it seems like nothing is happening. is this what has happened to yours, or is it something else?

dbb: i read today that RIM, the co that make blackberry's are having some legal issues - do you know anything about that and what it means for the devices?
dbbr
It's an American tech/IP lawsuit. Which means that yes, RIM lost a case in the supreme court. RIM will appeal, and the entire problem will be tied up for a few more years. By the time it is resolved, the underlying technology will be obsolete and the lawsuit will just drift away into nothingness.

The reason I think this is that corporate america, IT consultants, moviestars and the media are absolutely addicted to their "crackberrys", and to switch the network off would send tens of thousands into severe withdrawal.

dbbr
There is an article on /. this morning about the whole Blackberry lawsuit and threat of service outage :

http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/06/01/26/1949243.shtml

QUOTE
It seems to me that alarms are sounding a little bit too loudly here. For IP cases where licensing is the issue and a settlement is imminent; Prudently the company would pay the fine in lieu of a forced service shutdown. Case closed. Is it reasonable for the BlackBerry to be shutdown? No. Will it happen? No. Think like a reasonable judge would: punish the company not the users who use the service.

hmmm, sounds like alot of other ip cases that have put companies through the wringer recently, and usually for no reason other than some geek got stiffed and wanted to stiff someone back ... but thats another kettle of fish.

i gather from a quick search that blackberry's have java virtual machines as well - thus adding another device to the list of those that can run java bytecode smile.gif i have my favourite platforms, and you all have yours aswell, but they all run java apps, even an xbox (given certain semi-legal mods) ...

anyone else seen any cool mobile apps? i have been trying the 3d API if anyone cares?
