I've just joined at City Gym today on Light Square...

I've decide to get fit, loose some weight and get some muscles (well hopefully)...

I was wonder what other people have done, suggestions, experiences, etc, etc
funkylittleprincess
I used to do gym...i loved it....the best adise i can give is alternate...cardio one day weights the other....I used to have killer muscles a few years ago...would do it again if i could afford it.
Dalliedog
you have to combine exercise with great eating

low gi foods are better they take longer to break down therefore you feel fuller for longer

so stay away from processed foods, white bread and rice and starchy foods
xSketchyx
Definetly watch what you eat but dont under eat (pain in the ass i know) and keep at it, the weights will hammer you for a while it gets easier.
i used to be a 90 lbs weakling now im a 95 lb weakiling yeaaaaaaaahhhh biggrin.gif
foonji
ok so yeh, i recommend boot camp... eat like a horse, get worked like a horse, come out like a horse... damn i wish i kept up my fitness once i came out... lost it all... all gone sad.gif

Marcia here...

Eat whatever you like, all excess foods get broken down and stored as lipids (smallest fat molecules), after the body takes what it needs to support the body's metabolism.

The key to loose weight is to eat less or equal to the amount of calories or kilojoules you spend doing your daily things. I was so dissapointed to learn that no matter what you eat, it all ends up as fat in your thighs if you over do it.... sad.gif

For those inclined to go to the gym, you'll need more protein for the anabolic synthesis of muscle, so low GI won't be that benefitial, unless you're doing long distance running, then carbo loading is the go...

I love Biochemistry!! blink.gif

CITY GYM ROCKS!!!!!!!!

CALORIES EATEN < CALORIES BURNT simple rule to loosing weight!
kandii
I know heaps about getting fit an losing weight. I just don't put any of it into practice!!!! ha!
Fulcrum
I'm not a big fan of gyms myself... i prefer the open air.

What i usually do is run a circuit - 5-6km, every 200-300m situps and pushups (and chinups where you can find a bar)

If i do sprint training i only run about 3k and thats run-sprint-jog-run-sprint-jog etc etc

Having said that due to this damn cough i havn't run since the day b4 enchanted
jase31
Marcia here...

Yep, loosing weight is quite easy if you remember to burn more calories than what you put in your mouth! Its amazing that the "diet" industry is worth billions of dollars, through all the fad diets and cooking books and diet food.... dry.gif

what do I know about getting fit??? Judging by the size of my ever growing gut not much ha ha ha laugh.gif

I go to a gym with a drill seargeant for a personal trainer, and all I know is IT HURTS and its boring.....but the endorphins produced by excercise are good for the soul, or so I'm told wink.gif

I still think that dancing for 4 or more hours on a Saturday night is the best excercise ever....the girls out there like myself, who 'used to' do it will agree with me...ah, those were the days....I reckon we should start up a 'dance for excercise' group...mainly coz I find the gym a chore, whereas dancing is pure fun wink.gif
Anyone wanna join me? tongue.gif

Also, for getting fit one of the best and easiest ways to start is with incidental excercise....eg walk to the shops instead of drive, buy a bike and ride places if possible, get a dog and go for a walk everyday (and if she's like my dog, the trick is to walk fast enough so she doesn't choke herself laugh.gif)....these things are all good for the environment and good for you....I walk everywhere, and I think if I owned a car I'd be twice the size I am now....
jase31
Marcia here...

YEAH SMP! Count me in for a "dancing for fitness" thing. All we need is good tunes, a decent floor with no sticky alcohol, and some comfortable trackies... smile.gif

No one telling me how to dance is all I ask, I will never compromise my style. No posing session, just crancking it... biggrin.gif

Jase is definetly in too, you don't have to ask him twice to shake his booty... laugh.gif

Who else is in..?

keep your workout routine fairly simple... that way it'll be easier to stick to.

Workout every second day, do exercises that work more than one muscle group at a time:

Leg Squats - work quads, hamstrings and glutes (butt) as well as cardio!!

Leg Extensions - works all quad muscles

Leg Curls - works hamstring muscles

Bench press - works chest, shoulders, arms and back

Biceps Curls - works mainly arms, but also shoulders and chest

Triceps Dips - works mainly arms, but also chest, shoulders and stomach

Don't forget the good old push-ups and sit ups too... they work if you do enough of them.

You should do cardio AFTER a weights session if you want to lose bodyfat!! Weights burn up the "sugar" stored in the muscles, then if you do cardio straight after weight-training then your body will start to burn fat more rapidly to replenish your energy stores in your muscles and also to fuel your cardio workout. Even if you do 15 - 20 mins on the stationary bike, after every weights session, you'll be suprised just how quickly you drop bodyfat.
foonji
mmmMMm i wanna see BFA quality push ups and sit ups... tip with them... do the absolute maximum you can do... say it was 50, then half it... so 25... then do 3 sets of 25 pushups/situps with 1min breaks every second day... then after 1/2 weeks try to push out your max again and you should have improved. then adjust accordingly smile.gif

i do two times a month i usually go round delphin island in west lakes good fun biggrin.gif
Jutsin
You know I've just started getting back into the fitness thing, Paul - and I'm focusing mainly on building bulk, and getting the round parts more toned.

For building muscle (strength and bulk), in terms of weight training, the best thing is to stay around 3-4 sets with each exercise, 8-12 reps .. when you can comfortably lift 12 reps, you need more weight.. the 10th-12th rep should be impossible.. where your muscle is at the point of failure.

That's how you build bulk fastest, push the muscle to failure, give it rest, then go at it again.

I've changed my workout schedule now, I work legs, back and biceps (leaving biceps until last, as working the legs and back include the biceps with most exercises) and chest, shoulders and triceps on the next day.

I have one day on, one day off, one day on, one day off, etc.

I do abs every morning - I do as many crunches as possible until I literally cannot do another one.

You'll find a stable/strong core makes the other exercises much easier.

There's plenty of other approaches - but the people who have given me this routine are people I put a lot of faith in.

A proper workout (legs, back and biceps in total) should take not much under or over an hour.

Aim for that 60 minute mark and you should be fine.

Maori_Messiah
down with the beer and smoke, but fo sho dancing is the best exercise i lost 14kg over the enchanted weekend and thats all due to dancing and heaps of it, another way to lose weight is stop eating and pump wieghts you lose a butt load of weight because your not gaining weight plus your not losing muscle because of the weights you can keep it up for a day or so then you bust maccas but it's chilled for a day or 2

it seems to me that the hardest thing about getting fit and staying fit is motivation. Everyone gets the initial burst of energy and gets stuck into it for the first month or two then you hit your first plateau and allot of people give up as the results aren't coming as thick and fast as they were. This is where variety should come into it... if you feel yourself losing motivation try a new routine, hit cardio harder for a while or try different weights. NEVER be afraid to consult the gym instructors... your fees pay for them to be there so use them!

Keep it in your mind set that exercise allows better quality of life and get a buddy who can keep you motivated (I will put my hand up for this. In terms of exercise I am THE most motivated person ever and I will not be afraid to hollar out "keep working fatty" if you start slacking off), also makes it much more fun if you are working out with a mate, less of a chore, more of an activity....

my number one rule... simply going to the gym is not enough, work while you are there! None of this standing in front of the mirror posing like most lads do. If you're not working while you're at the gym you should just have gone to the pub next door and not cheated yourself!
crIs P
walking and thinking a lot helps me to keep the weight off. not that ive ever been fat or large but i used to have a bit of a roll around the mid section. and dont eat crappy food. lots of fruit and salads. dont eat carbs with protein either as they cancel each other out and you end up fat.

i walk fast everywhere i go. and my brain eats most of what i put into my body. biggrin.gif
LadyK
Lots of fresh fruit and veg and walking!! although the best exercise is pole dancing!!!! just look at carmen electra wink.gif ok, maybe for a girl its *thinks about installing poles at venus for entertainment purposes for all those trying to get into shape*
Its ok Paul- if it makes you feel better i have dance comps in February and I need to have a 'dancers' body by then *sigh*- i need to be able to shimmy & shake with out wobbling sad.gif so i too shall be joining you in the craziness that is 'getting into shape'

I got in and out of fitness patterns.

At the moment i do kickboxing 3 times a week.

Just got a membership at the gym so id like to change it too.

Kickboxing 3 times a week, Gym 2-3 times a week.

Me me!!!! Dancing is THE best exercise ever!! In the UK, I was out dancing 2 - 3 nights a week and walked/tubed most places - I have a photo of me at Gatecrasher Summer Sound throwing my hands up in the middle of a crowd and I look AMAZING (if I do say so myself!!)

I agree with SMP that incidental exercise is best - I used to be a sales rep for a wine company & was always lugging cartons of wine around & jumping in & out of the car. Never needed a gym membership then - but now that I'm desk-bound, I need to find time to be active. I never realised the importance of diet until recently either - I've changed my eating habits on the advice of my naturopath and feel so much healthier & have lost most of the "spare tyre" with only a little extra exercise. She weaned me off excess sugar & coke (a-cola tongue.gif ) and I actually now feel ill if I eat too much sugar!

Mich - I want you as my gym buddy!!
mich
done... most of my gym buddies burn out after a few months!!! LOL. I'm addicted to the gym and go 5-6 times a week. I'm desk bound all day, everyday too so I have to do something at the end of the day to tire my body out... gym is the best thing for it. Nothing like a 12 k run to help make you sleepy at the end of a long day!!
scattered
I used to train in Muay Thai which is a martial art 3 times a week and also did weights twice a week. I found this plus my regular dancing was more than enough for me...

The key things i think are good healthy eating and cardio work. Its one thing looking fit, but its another being fit!!

You what? 14kgs? Thats not good dude....

Most I've done is 5 kgs over a 5 day bender, and never again. I was sooooo sick it wasn't funny.

At the moment, I'm contemplating some form of martial art, or kickboxing, but have no idea what/where etc

Can anyone make any suggestions on this?

which gym you go to?
mich
Renaissance Centre in the mall. facilities aren't all that good but it's cheap and poser free... my two most important criteria in a gym.. i get to hog the treadmill because fat old men and women can't run!! LOL

if you're interested in a martial arts type exercise and haven't done it before I would highly recommend doing something like a body combat class at a gym, they teach you the techniques for all the basics and it's catered for people who have no idea about martial arts.. good cardio workout too and once you've done a few classes you'll have a better idea of what the martial art of your choice will be like.
kandii
yeah I've done combat before... but I actually want to learn a martial art... like properly. Not just for fitness, but for self defense, discipline... the lot.

Flinder Uni Muay Thai, theres a few girls there, including an Australia Women's Champion ohmy.gif

I can also recommend the North Adelaide Fitness Centre for kick-boxing - they use real punching bags etc. Their classes kick ass - literally!!! I guess they still do them, been a while since I've been & I live the other side of town now sad.gif

Anyone up for trying Kendo? I don't know much about it, other than it's a Japanese martial art in which you fight with sticks and you wear armour. Sounds like the perfect agression release to me!!! Apparently you can try a free class at a gym on Port Road - I'll find out more details if anyone wants to come & try with me!

pink_n_fluffy
all i know is that i should get off my ass and start doing such things tongue.gif
But i also think that you should enjoy whatever exercise your doing.. so if you don't like running.. dont' run.. find something else!! Other wise it becomes a chore and you give up after a while
xSketchyx
this is a damn good way to build mass and if you wanna tone it do the fatigue sytem....
12 reps then 10 reps then 8 reps but you MUST do a minium of 30 all up

Hi Paul a few suggestions to keep you on track with your goals and stick to this based on some personal experience. I am by no means a fitness freak & would much prefer to sit on my behind than exercise.

Find someone to go with. It is easier to commit if you have someone to train with. You also need to commit to 2- 3 times per week.

Add some simple extra activities into your daily life. So on days you dont go to the gym go for a half hour walk, or get off the bus 2 stops earlier.

Is the gym close by to where you live or work? It shouldnt be more that 20 minutes away from you because you just wont go.

Try different things until you find something that you like. I hate team sports mainly because I have a serious lack of co-ordination or ability. I have found things like cycling or swimming for me are far better.

Chart your success on a weekly basis so that you can see that you are improving.

Watch what you eat. You dont have to go nuts on this but more activity can increase your desire to eat more food. Try wholemeal breads or fruits etc for brekky. Also a big killer for me is a night on the town ( yes Coopers is particularly high in calories 135 calories/ 375 mls) and also to top it off the end of the night usually means a Yiros or a burger from Hj's.

This site is pretty good
//www.fitsmart.com you dont need to sign up for membership but you can use the calculator to work out your daily calorie intake base on your height & age. eg a 6ft2 30 year old male is approximately 2000 calories a day. The food database also can give you an idea on what foods have in the way of calories & fat content.

Drink lots of water as it helps overall

So good luck !!

PaulHamon

Thanks for the info smile.gif

Wanna stop the night on the town problem drink straight spirits (as I do) about 70cal per shot... which you mix with either soda water or diet coke... So basically... 2 drinks for the calories of one beer!

>>> ALL premix out, ALL beer out, ALL red wine out (ARGGGGGGGGGG)...

I currently walk 1 hour per day... with as at the start of my plan have doubled to 2 hours per day..

At 97kg a person my age burns around 2300-2400 calories per day... but 2 x hours walking add another 700-800 to that... smile.gif

I know that approximately 7000ish calories = 1kg of fatness smile.gif

So 'in theory' my body is using say... 3,000 calories and I need to be negative 1,000 calories per day (7000 in a week = 1kg of fat) .. so I can only EAT...

>>>> 2000 Calories smile.gif

Which is NOT alot a food... or... one 750ml bottle of Sumbucca wink.gif
PaulHamon

PS My house is 350 calories from the centre of Adelaide! So... 7 sambuccas = a walk home! Calorie Neutral smile.gif

don't eat junkfood.. eat lots and lots of good food.. that then gives you energy to go put on muscle.. don't overdo cardio but do lots of weights etc... try protien suplements before training coz fuck that stuff gives you the power to do so much more!!
I have watched 3 guys do this and it takes time but does work.. but you have to eat ALOT of food.. good food... and don't work it all off in cardio stuff
