The plan for my current phone runs out in two days .. which means I'm going to get a new phone, on a similar costing plan.

I've gone through the past 2-3 weeks just researching and trying to find what suits me best.

I've settled on a Samsung x640 on a $38 per month plan with Optus (I'm currently on a $33 plan, so it works out nicely).

I was wondering what your phone preference was, or if maybe you had a suggestion that could sway me from the Samsung x640.

i think u and morph need to get together, he is kinda in the same boat...

personally i like he kind of phone that ppl dont like, medium size and not full of too much technology, i like the simple things

Here is a good website... It lists all the available phones with their specifications (then you can take those details into the phone shops to get the right plan.

http://www.imobile.com.au/Streetprices/def....asp?manid=sams

my boyfriend has the Samsung E750 and at the moment it is the best phone around for internal memory storage at 92Mb that's about 2 CD's worth... it depends on what you are looking for. Tell us what specific specification you want the phone to come with and i'll help you out.. i just went throught this about a month ago so i'm pretty up to date with whats out there.

I want a clamshell phone, it doesn't necessarily need an external screen, but it would definitely be handy.

It doesn't need to be able to play mp3s, it doesn't have to have bluetooth or infrared (but one or the other would be a nice bonus).

I want it to have a camera, but it doesn't need to be a super-duper best camera in the world.. just decent, and I don't need it to be able to record videos.

Those are the biggest ones I think.

??? 92mb = 2 CD's worth?? hmm. the CD's i use store about 700mb each.

Justin personally i would say away from optus. ive only ever had a land line with them and they sucked. but ive heard a lot of peoples bad reports about their service etc. for mobiles also. just a thought...........

In the past 4 years I've had two phones, both on Optus. I've had only good experiences, which is why I want to try and find something on Optus. In the end though, I'll likely go for the most cost effective.

Well i was thinking that myself.. but he reckons that's what he can fit on there ... so maybe if there compressed tracks.. who knows!

but i wouldn't be so quick to knock down optus.. i'm with them, and i haven't had any problems so far (with the service.. my phone, that's another story). It can be hard to, because i have found that certain phones go to certain carriers.. so it depends on what your looking for.. the phone in particular or the carrier in particluar.... i wanted the phone so i ended up switching to optus from Telstra.

Justin - if you'r looking into a samsung and it has a bluetooth, just note that ATM alot of my friends have samsungs and most of them have had trouble with it, like not connecting or connection but not sending properly.. i had to have mine replaced completely.

The Samsung x640 (the one I'm planning to get) does not have bluetooth or infrared, or an exterior screen - these are three things I don't really care much about.

The Samsung E700 is another that catches my eye - it has an exterior screen at least, but I like the aesthetic design of the x640 better, plus I can be almost guaranteed the x640 will end up being cheaper.

But yeah - like I said, bluetooth is not a big deal for me.

What's the point of G3, by the way?

I heard that phone is easly broken and in reality it scratches up easy to so it may not look that good for that long. but agreed it's a sexy looking phone.

Yeah.. but that was because there were so many phones in such a close proximity to eachother. there just weren't enought towers to handle it all... it's just like NYE in the city.. delayed message recieving and all because of tower overloads.. everyone sending messages at once and not enough towers to handle it.

i would hold on 2 ur phone til next year and get 1 of the high end nokia N series. like the N 80 or the N 92. thats what im waiting for. either way, i'd go nokia with a symbian operating system. that way your not held back by phone capabilities, if you have a symbian phone u can install apps and games just like a PC to make the phone more functional to you. i have an old nokia 6600 and installed X-vid video codecs so i can watch full lencth movies on my phone if i want to.

yeah id hold off. wait a few months alot of new shit is coming out and looking quite good.
i have a 6230 with a extra 256mb card in it.

i belive KAndiRaver is talking about MP3 compressed albums. so 700mb of MP3s turns into about 40mb... 13x3.5mb per song? ruff guess...

u NEED blue tooth.. it is extremely worth it for file transfer and free sending of photos etc. also for hands free kits etc.

good luck on ur search

dude, you need to do some research on how DSL works. its not entirely Optus' fault for your dropouts. so many factors can cause the dropouts.

how do I know, I used to work for them and I know DSL troubleshooting, provisioning, etc etc..

I have used Optus mobiles since 2000 and I must say, never ever had an issue. I have a virgin mobile (which uses Optus' network) and no issues at all either.

with the millions of mobile phones being made each year, your gonna have problems with a large number of them, its electronics for you.

Justin, what do you want your phone to do? thats what you need to work on and also just ask around the question - have you had any problems with such and such phone? see if people have had problems and then go from there..

I'm on a vodafone cap thingo and it's awesome. if I'm going into a high spending month, like the one consisting of enchanted (where I seemed to make a hellova lot of phone calls looking back on my phone the next day) then I pay a little extra and get $500 of credit for $79. Otherwise it's $49 for $230. I would definitely recommend this over a plan if you're looking around. Reception has been flawless so far too.

ha ha ha ha!!! yes they are.. and we r satan's minion's so we use them!!

Samsung is an excellent choice Justin. We have one and its simple to use and very functional. they are getting better and better in their design and capability spec's too. Excellent service from them if you ever need it too.

We've also got a sony ericsson, again excellent phones. Toby was a Nokia man until he laid his hot little hands on my old ericsson and now he wont even give Nokia a look in. I hope the phones they release next year have improved greatly as they've been way behind the eight ball lately.

As for phone networks. Telstra suck the big one, nothing but bad service, high prices and and inferior products. Avoid at all costs!!! Voda do ok, better than telstra at least but I found when interstate that I couldn't use them as well (living in melbourne and trying to make a call in the city on the voda network... dreaming!!) They do ok here though from all reports.
Optus is definitely my pick of the bunch though. They give me free stuff all the time, I "lose" my phone repeatedly and they replace it under insurance without hassle and within 2-3 working days. Service is excellent, we had one issue with them but it wasn't the staff or the service to be blamed but the phone manufacturer and they did their best to fix it. Also absolutely love the send 3 sms's per day and get the next 30 free deal... works a treat for anyone who don't want to talk to anyone like me!!!
Ravvy
Well i went from a Motorolla T190 *mainly for the name really* which was crap as... on Vodafone and prepaid... *first fone kinda needed too i thinkg -- meant i had some money and when i spent it i didnt stress*

then i went to a Sony Erricson T610 and i have to say the only thing the next model up was better with was that it had a radio and videos... but the battery life and features of mine was better *my house mate and her fiance have the next one up* and that

Now i have swapped to 3 and have a LG8360... champagne green *drools* camera, mp3... mp4... its a flip fone but i wanted that because i hadnt had one and well... yeah... im on a $29 cap for $190 worth of credit

the only thing ive heard bad about 3 is the billing so im waiting to get my first bill before i fully sell them to other ppl.... smile.gif

Part from that... go for what you want... keep lookin at phones and checkin out the features and asking questions from the staff till you get the one you want... so what if no one can call you for 4 days.. smile.gif
KandiRaver
I must say that originally when i was looking at phones i was pretty desperate to stay with Telstra or Vodafone.. i know those two are really good. But in the end i had no choice but to go with Optus coz they had the phone i wanted.

Optus arn't as bad as i thought, they have improved alot over the last 5 or so years. so they may not be as terrible as everyone is saying.

All im gonna say is STAY AWAY from Motorola! i have got a v550 and i have had nothing but problems with it. It keeps freezing and turns itself off all the time. Also says all my files are corrupt and trys to delete them.....motorola is EVIL!!

Im with vodafone tho and ive always had great reception and no hassles there. If your gonna be wanting to use it for premium text at all tho, dont go with a voda cap...i made the mistake of sending a once off and they blocked me from sending text for 72 hours!!! it nearly killed me! lol

I have had a few phones in my lifetime and the best one i've ever had would have to be Sony Ericssons.

My current phone is one and has been through one hell of a work out and still works as good as the day i brought it!!!

SUPERSHOOTER
Three as a provider is shite! I saw what Jonesy went thru, the only place that he could make a connecting phone call to was the call centre with all the curries. Who wants to talk to some ill mannered (more than me) jackass who can't even speak English.
firestarter
I've been with 3 for a couple of years now and they do have advantages and disadvantages..
For -
-they were the first network to offer video calls
-their phones are great value for money (when comparing features with what other networks offer, pricing, etc)
-the network coverage is second to none (I think it's actually equal to telstra)
-they offer a really range of services via the 3 network
-customers on 3 get 10 minutes free talk time to other 3 customers 24/7, 365 (talk for 10 minutes, hang up, dial again, talk for 10 minutes... free phone calls!!!)
-their capped plans are really good value for money (they don't suit everyone though)
-ummmm, I'm with em???

Against -
-their customer sevice centre is in India... Sooo many things I could write!!!
-they're really bad when it comes to solving network, phone issues (they are getting better!!)
-the sales staff don't really have much knowledge of their own products and services
-ummmm, I'm with em???

My advice to anyone is to shop around... make sure the phone has the features you're after, the network offers a plan to suit your "style of use", how long they want to lock you into a contract for, how much you have to pay if you break the contract, etc...

The more info you can arm yourself with, the safer and easier your decision will be...

Im with telstra- pretty expensive for calling but 15c texts & free text from 8pm (up to 200 a night), so by the time im drunk i can message to my little hearts content!!\
Although I have a motorola V300 and it freezes and turns itself off- not often but always on the last letter of a long and important text mad.gif but it has piccies of my puppies on it so its cute wub.gif

I ended up getting the Samsung S342i, by the way.

I pay roughly 50 a month (about 15 bucks handset repayment, so the amount i have to spend is actually 35).

15 cent sms all day, and free text to other telstra mobiles from 8pm till 7am.

My first billing period ends the 22nd of January - so I'm looking forward to see how I've done on the usage.

The phone itself is awesome - my only gripe is that the ringtones it came with are all musical, there are no simple "ringing" tones :@

I'm sure I'll deal though smile.gif

dont get me started on this subject... but you have so.....

3 have equal coverage as telstra... because roaming is onto telstra. Now having said that, the service was alot more reliable when it was roaming to vodafone.
I moved from 3 to voda recently because i got sick of my old mobile phone dieing. etc

3 phones are cheap but crap... my current phone is excelent motorola V360V (vodafone live handset). my LG was the biggest piece of crap phone ive ever had the miss fortune to use (U8120)... and ive owned an ericsson before, so thats a statement and a half!! however the U8138 was reliable... i do give credit where credit is due.

The best phones I have ever had are Motorolas or Nokias they have both never really let me down.. motorola has once but not badly.

ill stop now, i have alot more i could say, but i dont want to ramble on...

Brian im with u on that one 3 has become crap ever since Telstra went to roaming for 3. the reception is crap and not only that the 3 phones are really flimsy and look really plastic... my brother inlaw did a excellent throw thew fone to the wall trick and the fone ended up in peices

plus 3 is very missleading with when u want to hear ur balance now it doesnt tell you how much you have spent .. they tell you what ur cap value is and that call u make is a separate charge to ur cap. you know when you have reached ur cap 10% over ur cap limit.

We complained to 3 company last week cuz my bro inlaw got a bill of $400 rather than his cap $112 and cuz they knew they were in the wrong they only made him pay the $112 not the $400.

so really why would u want to be with a company when there are so many head fucks with it?? oh and not only that when you do have a problem you have some operator that doesnt even speak english and you have trouble communicating with them. its heaps fustrating
absent1
Oh yes, reception... I forgot that.

My 3 phone used to cut out really badly where i live, and alot of the time not even get signal at all. LG U8138 with external relitively big antenna...

My new vodafone phone gets mostly full bars while talking no matter where i walk.
Motorola v360v with internal antenna.
KandiRaver
I currently have a Samsung E530 with Optus. I have had nothing but trouble (with the handset and the carrier).

I plan on paying out my contract (anything to get away from Optus) and an getting a new phoen through Vodafone (whom i have never had a problem with).

Now i want to stay on a contract, and the phone i am looking at is the Nokia N95.

Specifications: http://store.vodafone.com.au/mobile_detail.cfm?mobID=140
The main specifications i'm looking for is, bluetooth, speakerphone, camera, MP3 ringtones & external memory.

I am interested in people's thoughts on this phone.. Do you have it, do you know someone, or are you looking into this one two. How are Nokia's hardware and software compated to other companies these day's (i have not had a nokia in over 5 years).

Anyone's help would be greatly appreciated.
firestarter
steer clear of LG phones all together!!!

i've been with 3 for a few years now and yeah their customer sevice is shit!!! the way to get around this is if you have a problem, go to a 3 store and get them to call the service techs... it saves a lot of hassle!!

I think the best advice for anyone looking to buy a new phone is to buy a quality handset!!! regardless of carrier, if you buy a crappy handset you're gonna have problems!!! i've had my sony ericsson for maybe 8-9 months, maybe longer, and have NEVER had a problem.. i've dropped my phone more times than i care to remember and it still works perfectly!!

i'm still with 3, i'm on the $49 cap which gives me $300+ worth of calls, sms, etc per month plus $100 worth of calls to other 3 phones, which is kinda pointless really cos you get 10 mins free talk time 24/7 to other 3 phones anyway!!!

3s are starting to get really good in terms of deals caps, etc. and they offer really good phones too.
Optus is just getting a bit too exp with those extras (like free time, etc.) taken away. Plus not many pple are using Optus anymore so free time doesn't really work well.

I've got an W850i and it's awesome!! make sure you get the 1Gb memory card too, if you go for one of those
KandiRaver
black or white one?

I really want the white one but you can only get it throught Optus.. and there is no way in hell i'm going back to optus!!! (that and i can't afford to buy it outright) so still deciding on what to do about that atm.

black of course!! i pay $16 p/m for the handset + $49 cap with 3.. i've never come close to using all of the credit they give me and as anyone that knows me will say, i'm ALWAYS on my phone!!

I've got the Nokia N95 on Vodaphone $49 cap plus $30 for the handset each month. Awesome phone with GPS and maps (which was handy overseas), 5mp camera, mp3 player and came bundled with a 1GB memory card. Very versatile and coverage is awesome.
Jutsin
By the way, I ended up changing over to a Nokia 6233 on the Telstra $49 cap plan (250 worth of calls per month).

Extremely pleased, etc etc biggrin.gif

I got a 6288 - not bad - waiting for Motorola to make another killa flip phone - loved the V3i but it had it's limitations...

well.. after all the time i spent looking at mobile phones.. just when i'm about to purchase my Nokia E65 i decide against it and buy the Sony Ericsson W880i.

I love it.. the buttons are a bit small.. proably not good for those of you out there with fat fingers laugh.gif but the buttons are quite raised, so they are alright for me. I've also got one of those clear plastic covers over it, so i don't trash it.. and it still looks good and the buttons are still easily accessable.

Comes with a 1Gb memory stick.. which is great!

I liked the menu layout and the feel of the W880i better then the E65. The E65 seemed more business like and the screen just seemed "cold". After looking at the W880i i fell inlove with it. wub.gif
