Ive got a Uniden UHF radio that my Dad told me to put in my RAV (but wont be doing that). Its probably about 10 years old but it is well looked after and I swear by the brand Uniden (we used these on the farm in all of our vehicles).

If you are interested, contact me. Oh yeah, its the same one as Fo_Sho_Man has in his ute.

DeL
hehehhe nice! i was thinking of chucking a decent one in the rx7 at one stage as i only use the smaller hand helds when out cruising or on the highways doing my 10hr road trips home. come in very handy!

so alex has the obligatory 20 areiels on his ute the bundy mud flaps and the truck front bar?
letmeteachyou
No big aerials on his ute... I did offer to lend him the big white stick my family has but he declined. Everyone is different when it comes to aerials (just look at all the utes that went to the Deni ute muster last year)

A UHF is a great thing to have when travelling... we always have one when travelling, whether it be a hand-held or one mounted in the car itself. Is great if there is more than one vehicle - heaps cheaper than a mobile phone. smile.gif
DeL
yup we use them on our aniversary cruise 100+ rotarys... or even in our smaller groups cutting the hills apart.

but when im on the road it is an essential part of travelling. chat to the truckies and get police reports or up coming traffic. when its safe to over take etc always good blokes and they love it when i pull upbeside them in third gear then take off down the road then button off into a huge flame outta the ass of the rx7 wink.gif

i picked up my uniden for $200 brand new worth $350... sweet tiny little unit... used it back in the days of the zuki and cruisin days...but not for sale... i'll use it one day again.
letmeteachyou
Yeah, we always use them to listen to the truckies when doing long driving trips... comes in handy. smile.gif
ravingham
yeh i got one. tho it cost me like 150 for a pair so i can prolly do it for like $20. its really small and thats why it was expensive. its a udian too.

if u dont want it try ebay
letmeteachyou
Wow... good purchase there Foonji.... Uniden is a really good brand for sure....
letmeteachyou
Ravingham, is yours a hand held? If so, they dont have the range that a car-mounted one does (up to about 5km only if they are a decent unit) whereas a car-mounted one has a greater range if a good aerial is used...
DeL
and the national repeater stations are used will also increase range. hand helds are usually good for "insight" usage. 3km line of sight is quoted by most but in reality in the hills about 500 meters depedning on what area u are and how many hills are in between.. but yes extremely handy for communication.

and due to being a " driving aide" and a non directional form of communication they are not illgal to use while driving as opposed to mobile phones.
letmeteachyou
The downside to handhelds is the batteries they use whereas the car-mounted one uses the power from your car.

Use to be able to talk to family on Kangaroo Island from the farm in the Mallee (2 hours from the city) using the repeater - definitely something good tongue.gif
letmeteachyou
Whatever you do, dont buy Philips... bad, bad pieces of shit. My uncle bought them coz he is a tight arse and not one of his units work anymore. mad.gif
DeL
yup so true. we do go thru some serious batterys... then again using rechargables. and thelower set up costs the lack of ariels has its advantages.

but id much rather a proper UHF set up. but i no longer the the long road trips or the cruises as much so no real use for me.

fo_sho_man
Morph, if you want one, you want a car-mounted unit, none of those handhelds.. handhelds are useful for short ranges or if you don't own a car.. the uniden that I have is great.. has a small aerial, prob 30 cm one, and we were picking up truckies for at least 15-20 kms away out in the country, and they were on the road to melb and I was on the road to sydney, so shows you how much better they are..

whats the real purpose of you needing a UHF?
letmeteachyou
We use both types of units - hand-held and car-mounted for different reasons. Use the hand-held when hooking on vehicles to talk to the driver for ease of doing the job. We also use the hand-held when travelling with another car who doesnt have a radio - give them the hand-held and you are all set.

Morph... I would seriously recommend a car-mounted one as you get more value for your money...
morpheus
oh yeah i understand that. i had a uniden uh-100 in the last 4X4 but sold it when i sold the car (idiot) i have a UHF @ home, an electrophone 4200 but dont want to put that in the car. its 2 nice.. lol
DeL
go the car mounted all the way! if its permant fixture its better range its better sound quality and much greater usability.

listen to the country folk wink.gif

take Fo_sho or Letmeteachyou in with u wink.gif or buy LMTY's old one. easily done!
letmeteachyou
Go the country folks!!! tongue.gif

ok this is what has gone on. i got in contact with an old friend of mine who i know use to be in to cb radio back in the day. i bought a UNIDEN washington base station 27MHz radio and LESON tw232 base mice for $150. BARGAIN. its a beautiful radio to use. look it up in google image search. and i bought a UNIDEN UH-011 for $65.

so letmeteachyou, i wont be needing that radio of yours, but thank you very much for your offer. BUT i may know some people who might want it. so if u still want to sell it i can ask around.
letmeteachyou
Morph.. its Alex's one that is for sale so best to ask him... glad you got yourself a good radio.. we will have to swap channel numbers and have a chat on there one day... biggrin.gif
