What is necessary to get started?

If one where to get into DJing, I was curious what equipment those of you who already mix it up would suggest going with.

As far as my limited knowledge is concerned, you'd need two decks, a mixer, a pair of good headphones, and some speakers.

So.. what would be suggested as far as those accesories go, and have I missed some vital component?

.. also - apart from the vinyl addiction, how much would purchasing the necessary equipment cost in total. How much money needs to be invested to take the plunge, so to speak?

As far as turntables go; Technics SL-1210M5Gs or 1210MK5s .. (if you're certain you'll be sticking with it .. might as well get the best).

Mixers? I have no damn clue - this is what I need the current DJs for.

Speakers and headphones you can really spend as much or as little as you want, I guess - Senheisers would be handy for the headphones though.

hey mate smile.gif

definately recomend starting out with technics turntables - their in 99% of clubs, and is sometimes hard getting used to em if ur used to something else - that being said, if u plan on just spinning at home, cheaper priced gear does the job.

before my technics - i had gemini gear, solid stuff works a treat.

there was a good setup on RA last week for 600$.

mixers - i find the higher quality berringer mixers work a treat - for about 1/4 of the price of a pioneer equivilent.

headphones: i prefer a larger cup design to the smaller ones like the HD25`s and so on, its preference tho.

allow 1k for a basic setup... cheaper if u go 2nd hand but generally, i know 1200`s are around the 900$ each mark, and a berringer mixer u can nab for 300$.

the other option is cdj`s if u wanna mix on CD - CDJ100s`s are around 500$ each.

hope this helps. smile.gif

You can't go wrong buying Technics decks....just a matter of the small variances in models, but they're all good.

The standard mixer in clubs these days is the Pioneer DJM600. A very good mixer and weighs in around $1500, but ceratinly not the best. For familiarity, it's nice to have at home what you will find in the clubs, but that's a hefty price for a home mixer. Stay clear of the Behringer copies....near 100% failure rate. Vestax was the mid-range king, but they seem to be slipping these days. After that it's a muddle of cheaper brands such as Gemini. EVERYONE will have an opinion on which one to go for, but be sure this is something you will upgrade many times over while you're faithfull Technics decks remain smile.gif

Headphones are a bit of a funny one, but for output level, scary levels of midrange punch, brilliant isolation from surrounding noise, comfort and replacable parts, the Senheiser HD25's are the farkin bomb! Sure the $400 price tag is steep, but they will as lifetime. The SP version of these headphones are also great (and $150 cheaper), but annoying for DJ'ing with the cord and headband setup.

berringer - certainly dont get the same reliablity ,but all covered under a warranty.. mines about 2 years old, still going strong.. know of others with em.

but bleh, its like anything, u pay for wat u get..

Nessa
Allen & Heath mixers all the way!

Good set ups gonna set u back about 3 grand!

Sennheiser head fones are the best aswell, the good ones are about $450!

Only know this from my boyfriend! laugh.gif

Google for Behringer mixers, or go try buy one from Derros.....tales of hooror, with nearly every single one having fader problems. Having said that, the pile of shite Vestax PCV175 that the insurance company gave me to replace my stolen DJM600.... cross fader and a channel fader started failing after 12 months sad.gif

As for Allen & Heath mixers, note that I said the Pioneer DJM's are good but not the best.... the A&H mixers were what I had in mind....but screw that price tag for a first timer's mixer at home LOL
Jutsin
Dav or slide, you guys know anything about the Stanton SA-3 mixer?

A mate of mine's got one of them - only had it for about a year, but he swears by it.

Wanted a second/third opinion.

I've heard some good reports about them, but none that I trust totally. Google for it and the word 'problems' and you'll find plenty of reports if they have any smile.gif

Another thing you will definately need is someone to teach you the fundamentals of beatmixing and sound.

Theres nothing worse than listening to distortion

I've got a few people to help out there, and have already started - the next step is to get decks of my own though. Practice makes near-perfect, etc.. and I can't be practicing on other people's decks all the time lol smile.gif

Perhaps I shoudl rephrase then.

I'd prefer to have decks and a mixer of my own so I can practice in my own home without borrowing mates gear.

for me a decent mixer must have three things

1) good faders
2) good eq
3) good filters

that is all ;P

I do! wink.gif
nickdub
for me a setup should consist of:

2 x 1210mk5's (no notch at zero) smile.gif

a decent mixer (have been using an ecler concept2 mixer, and the crossfader is FAAAST!! although also have been using a behringer djx700 recently and have no complaints about it)

headphones that work (i am not a headphone slut - up until about 2 years ago i was still using a set of phones that i scored from a mate who was an air traffic controller. they were massively big, ugly, and fluoro orange, but the cup was massive and didn't let any noise in.....)

i think at the end of the day that as long as the gear you are using works and is the right price for your budget, then you have the right setup.....i mean, ferchrisssakes, when i started mixing records ( i was about 14 y.o), i started on a pair of crappy CDC belt driven turntables, a citronic mixer, and walkman headphones, and i believe that that held me in good stead for when i could finally afford decent gear - truly, if you can hold a beatmix together on shitty crapolla gear, then when you steup to the good shit, all the hard yards have been done, and u can progress quite quickly.
EpharGy
Well fuck the headphones off alltogether then get a flashlight and matchup bass kicks which u can see on the record wink.gif

Nice one - I think as far as mixers go I might start off with the SA3 and work my way up from there if necessary.

I figure I'll be spending enough on the decks alone, won't need to match the amount with the mixer too, hah.
