My boyf just got his Nissan Cefiro defected today mad.gif

He was pulled over for doing a u-turn on a solid white line, (this i can understand).
rolleyes.gif

Then they began to look over the car & defected him for the suspension being too low, the pod filter, tyres & mags & a few other things.

To top it off after they finished inspecting & defecting the car, he didnt even get the fine they originally pulled him over for!!!!!

There was a post message on anthems a couple weeks ago about getting past a regency inspection that talked about the legislation, etc. If anyone knows how to get hold of a copy of this can they please advise me. Ta cool.gif

Thaks for those links, always usefull stuff.

I just went through Regency for an ID check to get rego transfered from interstate. After 1 hour of searching they finally found the engine number wink.gif and after telling me the car would need a complete inspection I was then let through providing I removed the tint. Thank phuk for that.

Oh, while they were so extensively checking the vehicle ID they failed to spot that the car was infact a dark green sedan so instead they wrote down that it is a black coupe on their paperwork. What dikchaeds wink.gif

Good luck kerri with your BFs car!

hehe i think you'll find that unless its a ute, all 2 door and 4 door cars are classified as sedans.

i had the same thing with colour, my pearl at the time confused them, and they gave me the choice of having it called black, purple, or pink (!). naturally i chose black.

EDIT: i just realised you said they wrote down coupe instead of sedan.. so does ur rego paper classify it as a coupe? cos i only have 2 doors, and it says sedan, and i havent seen any different on any other 2 door car yet either?

yeah my madzda sedan has only two doors. good luck with the defect. ther eused ot be some one out there that was good to work with.. to erase stuff.. but now thats been gone...
SupraPolak
The Chaser is a 4 door sedan and when I was actually paying rego I told the girl it was a Sedan so she put it down as a sedan.

You are right though, I just checked my Supra rego and it too says sedan. Weird?

Isn't it the law that you can't do turns on a solid white line....only broken white lines?
I know you can't overtake on highways if the line is solid so maybe it the same for turing? Can anyone clarify this?
fo_sho_man
yeah smp, its the same, you cannot cross that line, unless of course your avoiding a hazard..

Or if you are driving and old bomb then everything is Ok. It's only if you have a nice car that they will pull you over to fine you AND defect you purely out of convenience.

I had an old boonger for a little bit while my Supra was in the shop. This thing was rusted out, suspension had shite itself, heater/cooling didn't work, speedo didn't work. BUT, every time I drove that around I felt safe that the cops wouldn't bother me, unlike when I drive one of my other cars. sad.gif

Well, I do u-turns at lights, full lines, medium strips... phft! :-)

As for getting your car through regency, you won't get through without changing all of those things, and maybe more. A defect in a car, is:

ANY alteration of the vehicle from the manufactured standard. Including altering to fit another standard, even if for the same model, make, manufacturer.

What you need to do, if you want all of these. Is make the modifications, contact an engineer (they will give you his number), meet up with him, sweet talk him, and get him to sign off on them.

Then when the cops pull you over you pull out this, and your right as rain. But if you have pissed off the cops... which it sounds like you have! They don't send you to regency for that! Then you don't have a leg to stand on because they can even make up shit.

I learnt this after being sent to regency for... and i'm not lieing you can ask Dalbz and That Guy With The Celica... "Oil on the engine" and "No battery clamp". The oil was there from when I had filled it up some time ago and spilt a bit, it was almost dry, and barley noticeable. The battery clamp was there, I pulled on it in front of him and he didn't care. We were on private property when he defected us too, which is supposted to be illegal. He also gave me a $140 fine, which I couldn't challenge and 1 hour to get off the roads... So I drove it defected :-)

Anyhow, if you want any more information or more stories of cool! Reply to this e-mail! I have also jumped my car over a train crossing (you probably know which one, if you've heard of someone else doing this). If you want to see a movie of it, I might be able to put it somewhere for people to see.

yeh to an extent i agree with you SupraPolak, nicer cars do get more attention and it used to bother me a lot.
but when you put it in context, hotter girls get more attention than umm, not-so hot girls even if the latter has a better personality.. biggrin.gif

i think its human nature to give more attention to items more pleasurable to the eye, so how can this be different for Police (and yes, last i heard they actually are people..) cool.gif

its such a common complaint that cops don't give old bombs the attention that they do for modified cars and i think its the wrong thing to complain about.
-> listen to our interstate cousins, they all think we have it incredibly good!
think about it, the only alternative system the SAPD/Transport SA could put in place so cops won't have to be as concerned about the cars on the road is having an annual roadworthy test (like Vic/NSW) - this'll get rid of the old bombs as you claim you want, but will also get rid of a lot of heavily modified cars too..

take ur pick, i'd rather keep our system as it is now.

sorry for the double post!

Engineer's reports are not the miracle answer many believe them to be!
an engineer's report is only useful if you keep the car to the exact specs as what the report says.
as soon as you change one item on the car from what the 'new engineered standard' is then the report is null and can be challenged by a cop by sending you to Regency (which he can do anyway is he suspects there is something different too).
this potentially includes minor changes like different tyre sizes (a different tyre size to what the car is released by the factory can be a reason for you insurance to be void at time of accident). its happened before and will continue to happen.
definate
You're right, it does limit you to those changes. But not many cops after seeing an engineers report and a regency certification, will then question wether or not your car is legit, since you have gone and gotten these things. Very few will start measuring your tyres and ride height and verify against the numbers in the document. This allows you to change things afterwards and get away with it... within reason of course.

The only ones that you will still bust you generally will bust you because they don't like you, or you pissed them off. You can't stop them. Besides lodging a complaint.
DeL
would be nice if they repsected the engineers report, but theres plenty of people that have been engineered and the cops laugh at them as they sign you off to automotove stalag 13... Regency...

i got done for a blown parker globe in my celica and a bald tyre that was above the tread bars. 1 hr to get home and a cop shop defect (luckily nothing mechanical). i was 45 minutes from home when defected and was followed home by no less than 2 seperate cop cars.

this was after they officer had almost wrecked my car in the private car park i was in ( yes they can defect you in private car parks if used by public, even if ur not there).
being a two door celica the seats are swivel style, the officer proceded to shake the absolute crap out of it trying to tell me it was lose trying to get something to send me to regency for.

i bought a globe from a servo installed that and changed my tyre the next day drove to cop shop and removed it showed the officer that removed the defect the 'bald tyre' he coudlnt belive i was defected for it.

your bestbet is to cover all bases restore to as close as stock specs and hope ot hell the god of cars is watching over you.

possible defects do include, no H patternon shift nob, no water in window washer bottle, no horn, loose wires under dash(speakers etc ), oil on motor, battery clamps (often batterys clamped from the bottom so look unclamped), number plate to side of bar, over sized rims/tyres not having correct speed rating,

thats a few of the more anal ones that i think are pretty pathetic to be done for.

At least in other states if you get something engineered they can't overturn it like they can here.

I'd much prefer to pay the price up front and get my car as heavily modified as possible. Then, get it approved by an engineer, with whatever changes need to be made, so that I too know my car is both safe and legal.

Let the Police do their job as Police and not as Mechanics.
Davin
Cops don't fear old bombs being able to outrun them, so they don't feel the need to make their life hell.

A standard turbo import of virtualy any variety could outrun a patrol car...if the driver has the skills, and chose to. Modify it, and it's only down to the law abiding nature of the driver that they will stop when asked to. That is what they fear, and that is why imports will continue to get defected.
buzzn
they can't overturn an engineer's report. that's the whole point of one. but they can challenge its validity if they suspect your car is no longer what it was engineered as. and thats logical enough. the only part of that i dont like, is that it displays a legal ideology of guilty until proven innocent.
its a shame no car enthusiast thusfar has had the money and motivation to challenge such actions displaying these potentially unconstitutional acts in court, it could have some huge repercussions on the way cops do their business...
Davin
Yes, this is the only area of the law (apart from some terrorism laws) where 'innocent until proven guilty' does not apply. In fact, suspected terroists are still applied more rights until they are proven to be guilty.

Where defects are concerned, there is no such thing as innocent. YOU ARE GUILTY... and must pay the fee to have Regency remove the defect. The police told me they only have to *suspect* your vehicle of being unroadworthy to issue a defect notice, however the actual defect sticker states that the dvehicle actually is unroadworthy.

Without doubt, I believe we are being bluffed, and the discrepencies give me a clue that someone with sufficent legal knowledge could eaily challenge the laws currently being upheld.

Consistency and clearly defined rules are all I'm after, not the ability to do what I want.
buzzn
hey Dav, lets start a fund, each week we put a dollar in, then in 50yrs time we may just be able to put up a legal challenge.. wink.gif
brapdat
take it thru as it is.

They will write up a list of all the shit you have to fix.
will cost you $70 but you get a free sticker
buzzn
lol, if its a defect sticka u want, i'll sell you the one on my home's back door for $30. its second hand, but looks 'as new' once back on a car...
