Being a rather ignorant person when it comes to automobiles blink.gif i'm after your opinions on which cars are best in different areas...

To start the ball rolling:

-most fuel efficient for size/engine capacity etc.
-better cars for country trips/long distance driving
-best space for carting as much as possible (cause i have a LOT of stuff!!)
-best price for all the bells and whistles (I want electric windows & a CD player)
-best 2nd hand cars (value for money/year of model and expected km's)
-best new cars (mmmm...new car smell laugh.gif )

...ummmm im sure thats enuf 2 start with...i no everyone can come up with more questions (and hopefully the answers) wink.gif

Basically i'm in the market for a new (old) car:
really needs 2 b reliable, can handle long distance trips, is reasonable on petrol, 5-speed manual, power steering, and i'd prefer 4 door... would like something newer than '97 and around $5000-$10000 mark (and pref under 100,000 km)
unsure.gif not 2 much 2 ask is it???
kandiir
Mmmm... I'm pretty clueless on cars, but I reckon you need something like a Rav4...

letmeteachyou has a black one, its a very good looking car!

I reckon you'll need a small wagon/mini 4wd - would make packing/unpacking all your stuff a lot easier with the "hatch back" style boot rather than a sedans boot.
fo_sho_manr
like this one kandii? wink.gif
foonjir
noooo not the rav4 tongue.gif suzuki sierra was teh bomb biggrin.gif i miss that car.
letmeteachyour

rav 4's are great but expencive! i just did what you are going through now special k and i think value 4 money, fuel, reliability and cost of repairs a toyota corolla is good.
and if you get a 4 door, even a hatch can fit a fair amount of stuff in it.... i live outta my car and i love mine! its a toyota corolla seca csx hatch and its a 1.8ltr, i live in the hills and it loves the drive up and goesnt chew the fuel like the old crappy sigma i used to own!!! smile.gif
melr
and no offence to anyone who owns one but stay away from hyundai!!
Decepticonr
Triple S PNissan Pulsar biggrin.gif

I wanted to get one of those hydrid half electric/petrol cars 1000 miles per gallon -OOPS I MEAN PER TANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
roomy and heaps of boot space with GPS
toyota prius
fo_sho_manr
one prob with jap cars is the cost of repairs, they are getting closer to the price of european cars for parts. you go to your local car parts place, and it costs you more than doubt for a camry oil filter than a commodore filter and the either thing is, the camry oil filter is about a 1/3 of the size of the commodore filter. every car has a fault or 20 and the reliability comes down to how you treat the car. what you need to do is research more so than what looks good and goes okay, the overall price is more important, like rego, insurance, repairs, services, economy, size, etc etc..

Ahh you're refering to the car which has about the same MPG as a diesel of the same model... YEP... gotta love them. It's only good if you stay under the 50kmph, and don't put your foot down.

If you want good mileage though, you can add 8+ batteries in the boot, which increases that immensly, then a method of filling up at home.

Toyota Prius with 100 MPG

hmmm hybrid cars...be more likely 2 wait it out till more come along wink.gif

but for now.....*eep* 4got rego etc.

old skool charades are great, reliable and the turbo ones returned the best fuel economy out of any turbo car and most non-turbo cars... to date, I don't think any car has returned better result..

they are 3 cylinder turbo cars.. their non-turbo brother is slightly more economical then again and they are very zippy cars.. the looks is what aint everyone's cup of tea..

here is a gallery of one of these beats (the G11 charade)..

hyundai santa fe......got a new one in february, and it has done 12000km's without skipping a beat, everything as standard (sunroof, electric windows, 3 x 12v outlets, mp3/cd player, constant awd). i love it, and i have never been a big wrap up for hyundais, but i have changed my spots on that one. took it up to falls and it handled extremely well. the only downside is that traction control is fulltime, which means that if u do go to the snow, u have to get 2 sets of chains - u normally never have to use them, but by law chains must be carried. u can override it by removing a fuse too.

on road was around the 35k mark, good value for money, and also a very high safety rating to boot. easy on the juice too biggrin.gif
joker4r
the new focus is pritty good, better than the last model, it just looks a bit better

I suggest an Ariel Atom. It's the only car anyone could ever want! It also give you another good use for your motorbike helmet!

joker4r
uummmm thats look sweet, where do i get one from

1968 VW Bug.... if you purchase one that still on the road and running fine, I will mostly likely keep running until 2020...

And the best part is... if it does stop working you can just park it on the site of the road, remove the plates and rego sticker and walk away! The disposable car.... about time they invented that.
joker4r
lol dude, uummm, im still wait for then 2 design a car, at at a push of a button, it shrinks to the size of ur hand, so then u can just put it in ur pocket and walk away, NO PARKING, and to never to forget where u park ur car, lol, done that a few time b4 with my old car, cant really do that now, cause the car stands out anyway

has any one else forgotten where they have lost there car, when they were stright, and not on anything tongue.gif

if ya looking for a 4 banger, consider corollas and pulsars. they have proven to be reliable and cheap to run.

didnt u used to have one??, where is it, i want to see it
Ravvyr
i still do have a corolla...
...kinda...
heres the story...
i moved to adelaide, my dad didnt like me not having a car, out of my Corolla n my brothers Camira, the camira was the least rusted and a bit bigger and a better city car... mine didnt like even Port Lincoln on a warm day...
so my dad sends over my brothers car...
and its a piece of shit cos everything has been going wrong with it since i got it...
and right now the Radiator needs replacing...
and im a really poor person and cant afford it, so the poor car is probably going to get sicker and sicker till it falls apart on me and then i'll cry...
But for the mean time, i do still have a Corolla...
its an 83 Sedan... its a beast... goes fast as.. faster than my dads holden...

now that made me proud when my dad and i would race from town to his place and see who'd get home first... and after lots of overtaking of each other and some back roads i managed to sneak in some mere seconds *he'd drive like there was no tomorrow, i'd drive like i was in a rally car race*

boy i miss living on the farm...

Very true, that - u can leave em in your garage unused for 10 years like one i had and starts straight away when u turn the key - they are aslo great for modding - drop a 4age in and pop on a hilux diff w/LSD for some sideways action - Wheeeeeeeee! biggrin.gif
KandiRaverr
when it comes to cars.. it definatley depends on what kind of specs your looking for.
for fuel effecinecy your best bet is the small cars (new ones, not old ones). i used to have a daewoo lanos and i got almost 500km out of a tank and it only cost $50 to fill up and that lasted me a fortnight.

The worst thing you could get is a 4WD (i'm only saying that coz all women who drive them think they are driving trucks! - plus they think they own the road).

Myself, i drive a Celica (but i dont want to get into that .. way to many problems with it already).

i recomend my "White Lightning"
1991 Toyota Camry (badged as a holden sad.gif ).

been a great car, apart from its current electrical system problem where its dimming the head-lights and dash-lights randomly at night... tis so great.

Skimmer333, You should check either your cars earthing points and the alternator to make sure its putting out enough power. Either of these could cause this problem...

i've got a soft top suzuki vitara... a 4wd that's not a 4wd... it's very economical and by far the best car I've ever had... perfect for summer with the top down, great for weekend camping trips because you can put the back seats down and load it up and you can go off road in it... it's been so reliable and cheap to fix, cheap for tyres....everything.. love it!! It's an older one (1990) dreading the day i have to get a new car, hope I don't for a very, very long time!
