GraphicConverter on Mac is awesome, so many things you can do with the app, it's not so much like Photoshop, it's just an editing app which does everything you want and it opens a billion different image files, some that Photoshop doesn't even open!

My computer was recently infected with spyware/adware that your popular standard programs such as Norton and McAffee cant find or repair. As the internet these days is getting flooded with this crap i thought it would be a good idea to post some shareware appz that arent so 'popular' that are very good. ill start off proceedings!

Adware Away - finds hijackers, trojans, adwares and spywares.
CCleaner - cleans all unessassery files and cookies that are hidden away in internet browser files, and major applications such as office, adobe, explorer, macromedia. first scan cleared 400mb for me.
PrevX Home - Very secure firewall, protecting against worms, trojans, spyware and hackers.
eWido Security Suite - Virus protection software much the same as Norton and McAffee.
Security Task Manager - Much more advanced task manager then the one found in Windows using Ctrl + Alt + Del. Comes up with full filename, percentage of threat to system, where the file is located and the author of the file. Find out weather some of your processes are unessassery spyware appz.

all these appz can be found and downloaded using a simple search in google. free to try, pay to buy deals, cracks are easy to find though biggrin.gif

Hopefully CS2 fixes many of my gripes with Photoshop, and im very very interested to see if the Camera Raw plugin lives up to expectations.

Otherwise i'll stick to Capture One Pro for RAW files and Paintshop Pro.

Anyways on shareware stuff....

www.keyhole.com i think it just got bought out by google, which is making a free version as well as paid.

Satellite maps of the earth (and mars) wrapped on a globe, many places in high resolution. Easy to find your house etc. Held my interest for a few hours.

You want a high speed connection for receiving data though.

Best ones i've come across are:

VideoLAN - www.videolan.org - plays many mpeg/AVI files that windows media player & realplayer couldn't play - freeware too.

mp3split - mp3splt.sourceforge.net - my favourite app lately - command line app that will split your mp3 files - just make a simple .bat text file with something like:
mp3split ps.mp3 0.00 60.00 -o 1hrdjset.mp3
and you're done - it just goes away & splits it from/to any start/finish time - perfect for recording DJ sets & other stuff live running a few minutes over either side & then splitting out the complete set later. Direct link to the Windows download here: (freeware)
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/mp3splt/mp3splt-2.1-win32.zip?download

Or for those of you who don't like command line apps (or don't know what one is, how to write/run a batch file, etc) a windows GUI alternative is here that does the same thing:
http://www.codevisions.de/hp/upload/_files/mp3splitter20.zip

Streamripper - streamripper.sourceforge.net - another command line app, this one records mp3 streams for you. This & mp3split are the 2 most used apps on my PC lately.

3GP to AVI Converter - www.miksoft.net/mobile3GPconverter.htm - got 3GP files taken with your mobile phone? Convert them to AVI video using this awesome utility which you can then share with friends/family.

If your using Win95 or 98 and can't open/use that app, u need the VB6 runtime files here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/vb60pro/Redist/sp5/WIN98Me/EN-US/vbrun60sp5.exe

A command line version of 3GP to Raw AVI is here:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/downloads/3gpToRawAvi.zip

That's all i got for now biggrin.gif - more later...

A couple of good programs:

Freeware Foobar 2000 found at http://www.foobar2000.com/ it's an audio media player, very customizeable but for the more "nerdy" type

Freeware Media Player Classic found at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358&release_id=314365 it's a good visual media player, simple and lightweight. I find it better than VLC (VideoLAN) for Windows at least.

Freeware K-Lite Codec Mega Pack found at http://www.codecguide.com/features_mega.htm the best pack of codecs for watching the most popular video formats

Freeware FireFox found at http://www.getfirefox.com/ i'm sure everyone has heard of this by now, but if you haven't it's the best web browser... better than internet explorer

Freeware WhoLockMe found at http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/index.php an excellent application which tells you what programs have locked what files, for when you need to move/delete something and windows denies you

Subscription Nod32 found at http://www.nod32.com/ the best anti-virus application software you can get, you don't pay per version, you only pay each year/two years, catches more than Norton/Mcafee/* and is used by Microsoft on their desktops and workstations

Freeware TrueCrypt found at http://www.truecrypt.org/ the best encryption software available to man, supports per file, partition and device encrypting.

i've used a program called audio terminator to split mp3's before, its not the easiest but you can figure it out without much mucking around. best thing is its freeee smile.gif

one freeware app i have to recommend would be audiograbber to rip mp3's from CD. it destroys windoze media or anything else i've tried to use.
