Dubstep. Hmm. Did someone say DUBSTEP!!?!?! Yes I frakin did! And I’ll say it again and again. DUUUUUUB......STEEEEEEP!!!!! I don’t know about you but I cant get enough of this incredible genre that seems to encapsulate every other genre. All in one. frak yes! Techno. Trance, House, Drum and Bass, Electro, Ambient, Rock, Death Metal, whatever your taste, Dubstep has it. Sorry did you say Dubstep? frakin yes I did!! If you haven’t heard any then you need to get yourself some, or find a friend that is willing to give up their prized collection.
Finding its roots in Garage and Dub, this beat driven music can only be described as rootsy. This is where you find your soul. Your tribal, basic, intelligent self. So harsh and dark, but soft and beautiful at the same time. Something you wont forget. A soundscape put together by the right DJ, will take on a journey from ‘sitting on your porch on a Sunday’ to ‘driving the worlds fastest car on the worlds straightest road’. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Is the only other way I can describe it.
I've been wanting to write this article for some time, but the thing that made me actually do it was standing outside at 2am on a Thursday morning with my speakers as loud as they will go, knowing full well that I wont get a visit from the boys as my neighbours are most likely getting a better sleep from the soothing effects of the frequencies I'm sending to them. OK maybe my speakers aren’t shaking Grandmas Christmas present off the “I don’t know where else to put it shelf”, but its frakin loud. So, my point being, Dubstep not only makes me feel good but I can listen to it the way I want to, when no-one else is around and not piss anyone off. Great!!
(DISCLAIMER: Kids this is not advice, don’t try this at home.)
And something else I realised is that I just bought a crapload of this stuff online. I haven’t bought any music for mixing in around 15 years. WTF!?! I have friends who are just starting to get into the sweetness also. Friends who don’t usually get into the broken beat. One in particular who has described Dupstep as the only thing I've ever shown him musically (in the 23 years that we’ve known each other) that has excited him . Check it. Do yourself a very large favour and find some. Get as much as you can.
As far as I can tell its only just found its way into Australian clubs in the past year or so, but has been making huge waves in the UK for a couple of years. Artists such as Jayar (Adelaide) and Same 0 (Melbourne) are obviously pushing the sound in recent times. I've heard mixes from both of these guys and from many of their UK counterparts such as N-Type and Skream, and I have to say our home talent is up there with the best of them. Keep your ears to the sky (I don’t care if that doesn’t make sense), Dubstep has made its mark and is definitely here to stay. I for one know that I’ll be pulling out some old and scratched CD ,when I'm old and grey, and still appreciative. It makes me feel like exploding and imploding at the same time. It makes me want to mix 24/7. No other genre does that for me. I've found it.
